I was about to buy a 2000 4Runner Limited 4WD at a private dealer, what made me suspicious was a low price. Then that strange smell. The car turned out to be flood damaged (thanx god i made a check). but it really looked good outside and seemed to have no other problems. maybe, I should have bought it?

Go with your gut. You didn't buy it for a reason. What seems too guy to be true has a reason why.

Before making any deal and after vin number checking: check this pre-purchase list.. mind that flood damaged cars may look perfect outside but all electronics is already damaged see also, and this to avoid them, maybe you've saved your life buy refusing to buy it

That smell is mold. Wise to pass on this on. Plenty of cheap 4Runner's to be had, just keep searching.
