Some on hit my 4runner

I had some one smash into the back of my 4runner 2 weeks ago, my home made bumper didn't falter at all. only the factory bumper brackets got bent down, i knew these trucks were tough but i didn't know they were that tough, her car was really messed up though.

Got any photos of the bumper (before and/or after the collision)? Just curious as to what saved the rear from getting all smashed up. I have an SR5 bumper, which is slightly more durable than the other tin-can-like bumper that came stock on our 1st gens.

I'm trying to decide on what to get on the rear for more protection from the type of rear-end accident that you describe in your post. . .

Rear ended

If your 4-runner is a second generation, the scenario that you described would be what I expect. The older vehicles were much more solidly built (and heavier) than modern ones. Bumpers made out of chromed iron with shocks have been replaced by bogus ones made out of plastic. You would think that replacing plastic parts would be cheaper and that would even out the "progress". Not true, body shop costs are about the same for all vehicles depending on how easy it is for the workers to obtain parts.
