Somewhat urgent suspension swap problem:

My T4 is in the shop right now getting new brake calipers, so I had them put in some Bilstein 5100s while they were at it, but the shop just called me and told me that the 4 shocks are connected with hydraulic line? didnt think about the XREAS system. Said they probably couldnt replace just the front 2, had to replace all 4, which aint gonna happen because they only ordered the front shocks. Has anyone dealt with this before? can they just cap the lines? I was going to order the back 2 and do them on my own in a month or so

No, you're going to have to do all 4 at once. They're all connected within the system, but the system functions using pressure diagonally across the vehicle.

Crap. so I'm assuming they couldnt just cut the lines right at the back shocks and leave me with no rear suspension for a bit. Darn liability concerns. Thanks superman. Friggin sweet T4 by the way

No sir, unfortunately it's an all or nothing deal. You must either replace all four shocks or leave all four as they are!

Doubt it. A lot of shops not familiar with XREAS blow the entire system all the time when working with it and not knowing what they are doing. I never had XREAS, but it just seems like a PITA to deal with.

But hell man rear shocks are cheap. 5100's would run you like $300.

From what i've seen so far, the only thing Toyota messed up designing was the XREAS. Everything else seems rock solid. And you know, for the amount they were gonna charge me for the front shocks and install, i might as well order a complete set of 5100s and just install them myself. Thanks for the info guys! One of these days i'll get around to posting a build thread to show 'er off

Just realized I swagged the price of those shocks WAY too high. I only payed about $78 a piece for mine.

I see some Icon VS's for like $138 a piece. Anyway, the point is that if you just need rear shocks, they can be had for cheap

I dont think Toyota screwed up with the xreas .I had xreas up till about 80,000 miles. I loved it, It handled like a sports car. Almost zero body roll. I only took it off because I wanted to go lifted and I wanted new parts not spacers. Now I have some body roll but the runner still handles pretty well with the OME stuff, nowhere close to the xreas though. I wish I could get extended aftermarket xreas type shocks, I would have bought that instead if it were an option. I thinks its an awesome idea.

Yeah, absolute yota, you have a good point. I suppose I don't like it coming from a modification/replacement and cost standpoint. I've read a lot about the system and how costly repair/replacement is, vs just ripping it out and putting in regular tubes. Somethin about Toyota making a truck drive like a car, which I will thumb my nose to, coming from a long line of lifted, wheelin, manly man vehicles. But you're right, on-road, it does appease the city folk. Although I do have to say, everything i've read on here kind of convinces me that a set of bilsteins will ride better than any stock suspension

I dont see any reason why they couldnt disconnect the front two at the quick connects on the frame and leave the rear connected until you get new rear shocks. The rears would still be pressurized doing this. It wouldnt work diagonally but it would still dampen the travel..
