Sony RX100

Now, the only real P&S that has a chance against the RX100 is the Panasonic LX7, which is probably YOUR best choice if you want to stay below $500. LX7 has a small sensor (same as G15), but its lens (Leica) is damn amazing...allowing it to almost match RX100 in IQ. That is very impressive given the small sensor. Leica also makes a clone of the LX7 but price it much higher (for the name). The LX7 is surprisingly slightly bigger than RX100.

This should give you most information that you need.

Thanks! As always I (we) can count on you for your detailed research and help! I do like the look of the LX7 over the G15 after looking into your links and a lot of other reviews. A lot of people seem to love the G15 as well. I really wish the G15 was just a little better, I would love to be able to use the accessories I have for my 40D with it. Zoom is somewhat important to me, but I like the ability of close focus and ability to blur backgrounds. Found a good site that compared all 3 with regards to that. I really hope Canon slips something into the line at CES, if not I might be forced to go with the LX7. My first digital was the S40, then the S500, then the 20D, now the 40D. My wife has gone through probably double those. Thank again for the help!

I doubt it...otherwise, we would have heard about it by now. Canon won't have anything that beats LX7 or RX100 at CES this year...and it certainly will NOT be cheap if Canon did something on the same level as Panasonic LX7 or Sony RX100! So, there is no way that "it" will be within your $500 budget. Canon has been playing safe these years with the S-series because the S-series (S90 specifically) were so good (relatively) and were so much better than everyone else P&S's. Sony RX100 took them by surprise i think.

I think that Canon and Nikon are now running back to the drawing boards to make their next generation of compact cameras on the same level as RX100...and this will take time...probably not until 2014 before we see the big boys coming out with RX-fighter...and they certainly won't be cheaper than Sony's! A high quality lens + 1" sensor = $600+ market easily. Look at LX7...superb lens + ordinary small sensor is already hitting $500 range.

Usually they keep it 'hush hush' until the show, that is what they have done in years past. With the G15 being so new, I don't really see a new one coming out (I can wish though). The RX100 seems like a great system, I wish I could get my hands on all 3 to try them all out. I am waiting to upgrade to whatever replaces the 7D, rumors are something might come out at the show, but who knows, always rumors about something.

The RX100 is not out of my budget, I just would like to spend less if I could. Then again, you get what you pay for. I do like the physical controls of the Canon and LX7, wish the Sony was not so software/touchscreen based. How have you found it to be trying to adjust setting quickly and easily on yours?

If it is touchscreen, then someone forgot to tell me about it!! :D It's not touchscreen. For me, i came from Canon S95...so, i had some idea about the controls and the different functions. Sony RX100 operates similarly...so, the learning curve wasn't bad at all. The online PDF owner's manual is helpful.

I don't know why I put touchscreen, my mind was about 7 different places when I wrote that I think. I did end up ordering the G15, will be here Wednesday. I read a TON of user and professional reviews on both cameras and watched endless Youtube comps between the two (RX100 & G15). The G15 just offers more features that will be useful to me, I am crossing my fingers that the size will be something that I will be happy with. Did you see the new Canon's announced at the CES show? Nothing on the higher end, but a funky little one, and some lower model ones. I will stop polluting your RX100 thread with the nasty Canon name now :)

Cool...remember to give feedback on what you think of it! You can use this thread to give feedback on your Canon...it's all good. :)

Had a little time to play with the camera and I am very happy. The controls are so quick/easy/fast to access! Using my thumb and 2 fingers I have quick access to everything. Keeping with the Canon brand makes the learning curve almost non-existent since the menus and buttons/controls are so similar to my DSLR. I actually thought the camera would be a little larger that it is, which I am happy it is not. Plus I already have lightroom, CS5, & the existing Canon software so this just blends in smoothly to the flow. It has great macro ability, one of the selling points over the others for me. Here are a couple quick shots of a little matchbox car my little one was playing with tonight, trying to sneak shots in when he was not looking...

I just order a Joby tripod...
GorillaPod Hybrid: Flexible camera tripod for hybrid, CSC, EVIL cameras
...will be here tomorrow!

Wow, that is some nice macros!! Very nice camera!! Congrats dude!

The RX100 is amazing as well. I think Canon does not have a choice but to compete with the Sony with their next release. I'm sure will will see a big change. I debated on waiting, but who knows how long it will be and I want something for now. I could always sell if the G15 and jump to the new Canon, if it really is something amazing, but then again I'm sure the price will be too! Oh, since this IS a 4R forum.....

For whatever reason, photobucket is downgrading my pic's quality a bit. :(
