SOS-Stuck in Montana-Cylinder 4 misfire

Hey guys it's been a while but I am hoping to get some advice.

I drove my 97 from Phoenix to Bozeman, MT. I need to drive home Saturday so I am pressed for time. I went 5 days in the cold with no issues. Today she started to sputter at low RPM with my foot light on the pedal. This graduated to a full sputter off the line. There is no sputtering at higher RPM and the issue is not as bad at speed. It felt like a misfire. It threw a code-Cylinder 4 misfire.

In an attempt to go simplest to most difficult solutions I started with anew coil pack on the affected cylinder, and to replace the plug on cylinder 4. The coil pack was not the issue.

Like an ass I replaced the plug on cylinder 2 by mistake. Now I have another issue because the boot is refusing to seat in the hole in the top of the head. I press it down in there and there is definite counter-pressure from the spring. When I release it though the damn thing won't seat. Any suggestions about getting the boot to seat back in the hole? I did put the original plug back in thinking possibly the new replacement was too long but had the same issue. How terrible of an idea would it be to drive it with that boot not seated all the way into the head? Where could I be going wrong?

Cylinder 4 is still misfiring. If the plug doesn't do it is the next stop fuel injector? If this is the case, how likely is shit hitting the fan driving from MT to AZ with this misfire issue. Is there a way to diagnose an injector issue without ripping into the motor and replacing the injector?

Thank you so much, everyone. Just trying to get home safe.

I recently had a cylinder 3 & 4 misfire code. I replaced all 6 plugs, (Denso) and wires NGK. That fixed the misfire. Don't know about your boot issue though.

Replace the spark plug wires. They are pretty cheap and widely available, your average parts store wires will do just fine. The spring probably bent by accident and is not fitting over the spark plug right anymore. I highly doubt cylinder 2 will work right for that long with a boot not on. Plugs for the rest as well, cheap and will rule it out.

The sputtering under load is a hard one to diagnose really. Could be anything from a clogged/dirty MAF not seeing air flow correctly, to leaky/faulty injectors, to throttle position sensor, etc. Hard to really say and don't want you to spent a bunch of money on parts just for the problem to show up again in 2 days on the road.
