Sound when starting up

I have a base 4 cylinder manual and when I go to start it, there is a screeching sound that comes from up by the motor when the motor turns over to start. The sounds last for maybe 2 seconds and then disappears. The motor runs great after with no unusual sounds. My dad thought it may be a belt. Can anyone else help me with this? Any ideas on what it could be? How to fix?

Sounds like a belt is loose to me too. You could tighten them up or replace or both.

Okay thanks, I will got check them out! Is there a way to tell if they are loose?
