Space for 3rd Gen vs. 4th Gen

When I got my 4th Gen in 04 I ran across a person that had a 3rd Gen and she made the comment that she opted for the 3rd Gen because it had more space (not sure if she meant cargo or head room or what). I kind of looked at her puzzled because I figured the 4th Gen had more space all around. I don't know alot about the 3rd Gen so to those that know... what is the verdict?

Maybe she meant she has more space in the garage. The 4th gen definately has more space (except oddly enough, the front leg room).

I think that she may mean cargo volume with the seats folded. I don't have time to search, but i think that the 3rd gen was 4 cubic ft more or something.

Found it, after finding my 1996 4Runner brochure.

Cargo volume in cubic feet:
3rd gen (seat up/down): 44.6/79.8

4th gen w/ 3rd row seats (up/down): 36.6/12.0
4th gen (w/o 3rd seats/with double decker): 42.1/40.6

Toyota doesn't give specs for the 4th gen with the second row folded.

My roomate has a 3rd Gen and I have a 4th Gen. We are both DJ's and have to haul speakers, amps, consoles, etc around. I cam personally tell you that with the seats folded down, there is significantly more room in the 4th Gen. I would say about 2-3 inches more in width and height. If you think about it, maybe the cargo area alone with the seats up is smaller in the 4th gen (though I still maintain wider and higher, though maybe not as deep), but after you incorporate all that extra legroom and headroom for the rear seats, I think you will find that with the seats folded down, the 4th gen has more space.
