Spam - Please read

By now everyone has seen that the forum is being hit with a ton of spam. The problem is each account posts once and then never again. So deleting the post and banning the user is only clean up, and does not prevent additional posts.

The good news is the spam seems to be coming from 3 specific IP addresses, which if they can be blocked altogether, should bring this matter to an end. Doing that is unfortunately above my pay grade.

I say all of this to ask that you be mindful of what posts you're reporting. Each mod gets an email for every post report. Lately it's been almost 100 emails a day. It's way too many. If the spam post isn't new please do us a favor and don't report it. Think of it like traffic; if you were sitting in traffic for an hour and finally saw the accident causing it, you wouldn't then call the police to report it. You'd probably think someone who encountered it earlier already has.

People reporting things is very helpful and I'm not trying to minimize that. But at this time the insane amount of emails is way worse than the spam itself.

Also, please don't quote the spam. Just ignore the spam. If you're in a thread and you see brand new spam, report that. If you see old spam, ignore that.

Thanks in advance and hopefully this get figured out soon.

Jesse

I can't keep up with ****Utelp. Fortunately their names makes it easy to search and delete. no need to report these, I'll delete them in mass once or twice a day.

based on the hundreds of emails the mods are receiving, I think many of you haven't read, or don't understand the above. I'll mention a couple people in hopes that they will come here and stop spamming my inbox:

you're getting spammed because spam users are remaining unbanned for too long a period of time and allowed to make too many posts

it sounds like the problem is that you need more moderators or better moderators

user registration should be locked, new user sign ups should require approval to stop this. vBulletin also has an option to require questions and answers for human verification (or at least it used to), or at the very least require more fields to be filled out. is the site even using reCAPTCHA 2.0?

the common spam words should also be blocked

and why is this running on vBulletin version 3?!

I thought this was war, i went for 2 days and reported every spam that posted, most within 5 min. Of the spam post, so yes i blew up your e-mail, and frankly i don't give a damn. I am with 06oral on the spams being left to long, that is what the spammer wants so? If me blowin up your e-mail because i report the spam is not working for you guy's then fix the problem, or ban me reporting, and trying to stop them. I'm either in, or out.

Let me add to this, i just went and reported 5 or 6 new spam names to you enjoy your day.

I am gonna say i agree with this.
You guys are running outdated software.
I am a mod on one large Toyota forum and a small PNW forum. Software is current and we don't have issues like this.

So you make an announcement in the 5th gen folder? Why not the site related section
Site related - Toyota 4Runner Forum - Largest 4Runner Forum

I hit new posts and that is where I see them I don't look at the folder.

If you can't ban the IP's who is the site admin?
Do the IP's get reported?

You guys need to a better of new member verification like Captcha as mentioned several times.

If you need help moderating I will throw my name in the hat. Being a moderator takes some dedication and sometimes it takes a little work.
To be honest I find it hard to believe a mod would say to stop reporting post.

Agreed 200%, also on the site I mod we can IP ban with in 30 days of the user joining... its a spam ban that deletes all posts with the account.

oh, so it's as i suspected, you're a jackass. got it.

Spam is out of control today... what's going on here? Since I receive thread reply notifications to my e-mail, it's now spamming that up. This isn't an issue on any of the other forums I frequent, so I'm sure something can be done, right?

Looks like a lot of much smarter people then me have already given suggestions - Not sure who runs the site but I feel its the Admin/Owner not giving enough support that's more of a problem then the Mods.

Would having members get ahold of that person make any difference? Like someone else posted, I would be willing to pitch in some $ if it would make a difference - that said it the owner of the site is pulling in 5k a month from advertising revenue.....not a chance they are not paying out of pocket!

Alright, all you whiners.

I just banned 252 spam accounts made in the last day. They're being made at a constant rate.

We have sent information about this to admin, who as you all know, has all control over this forum.

Until someone updates vbulletin to the current version (version 3 is at least 10 years old) and implements user registration changes (q&a, recaptcha 2.0, approval, etc...) be ready for a losing battle

I'm happy to help moderate the spam posts

Not sure if this is related or if the version of vBulletin they’re running is causing this issue, but I’ve noticed now whenever I come on here on my phone and use safari to actually use the desktop version instead of Tapatalk, it says “Website not secure” up in the address/search bar when I go to put in my login info. Been like this for about 2 months now. It’s the ONLY website I’ve found that does this.

So who is the admin ?
That individual either needs to get you guys some help or give another mod admin powers if other individual (admin) is unavailable to take care of this issue

I know a couple of people at Internet Brands, they own V-bulletin. Want me to ping them to find a good easier plug for poopcanning multiple IP's?

Thanks for jumping in and banning the accounts, however you are human and you're fighting bots.... easy to build code snippets on a server that in this case are creating new spam id's infinitely. You need reinforcements to stop it at the source.

I've said before that I'd throw down some coin or skill if need be to the cause. If money for an upgrade is the issue, gofundme's are easy enough to start.

There are vbulletin plugins that can automate some of the IP bans but it might require updating to a version from the last decade

I would think this is an Admin issue. Holes are bursting through the dam, and the Admins are handing out mops to the Moderators. Those of you who know how these platforms work keep up the positive suggestions. Member input finally brought about picture resizing so maybe a helpful solution will be implemented here for this. I think it serves no purpose to beat up the Moderators who are obviously working their butts off trying to keep up with this security breach.
