Spare key and/or FOB

A friend of mine just bought an 07 4th gen 2wd SR5 for his son. It came with 1 key and 1 FOB. Is there anything special about the keys or should he be able to have a spare made somewhere without going to a dealer? And how can he find an extra FOB that should work? Can he just search the FCC ID on his FOB online and buy something that matches?

You can buy fobs on eBay or amazon as well and program them in the same kind of way. Just google instructions on how to do it.

Interesting to know about the keys, I needed up paying aroun $100 for an extra key at the dealership. Nice to know this can be done, my own stupidity for not doing more research!

You can pick up a key fob on ebay and program it yourself. I did this and also had some extra keys made at a locksmith which was costly. There is a much steeper cost if you don't do this now with a good key in hand.

Thanks. So here's the deal - my friend has found a place here in town that will sell him a blank and cut it for him for $69. He is willing to pay that but wants to make sure it will work. But when they put his information into the system, it brings up a warning that the key they have will not work for Toyota's with "PROX". Best I can tell, this means a proximity system and his truck does not have this - is this a safe assumption? If so, if he goes ahead and gets the key, I assume he can then take his old key and the new key and follow the programming procedure listed in the thread you posted and he should then have two working keys?

This is what I did which I think is the cheapest and easiest way. Get a new key on eBay. Make sure it has the "dot" stamped on one side and not the "G" (G is for 2010+ keys for most Toyotas). This dot will be on the metal part of the key on one side right near the black rubber. Have it cut at the dealership by the VIN so it's an original key and not a copy or a copy of a copy. My dealership charges about $10 for this service (but once did it for free), just be sure to bring proof of ownership with you. Then use the instructions posted earlier in this thread to program the key. You can also buy a fob on eBay and program with instructions on Free Keyless Remote Fob Entry programming instructions, procedures for all automotive vehicles. You should be able to do all of this for less than the $69 the locksmith wants and you will have an original factory cut key. If your friend goes the other route, that should work too, but you will have a copy key. The "prox" should mean nothing.

Thanks, my buddy is sort of old school and doesn't play well with online stuff, which is why I'm posting these threads for him. He is perfectly okay with getting a key made locally for $69 and would prefer to just do that. He just asked me to make sure we can match the key to the truck before he spends the money and then it won't work. The nearest dealer is an hour away and the $69 is worth it to get it done locally without having to burn gas back and forth and wait for things to be ordered and delivered.

I just bought two keys on ebay for $12 total and had them cut at the ACE Hardware for $1.99 each. Total investment of $16 for two keys.

Neither key had the "dot" on it.

I used the programming instructions and they both work like a charm for my 2004 Limited.

No reason to waste money on something that doesn't need it.
