Im confused about extra keys for my 4runner.
So it is possible for a lock smith to make extra keys to start, unlock doors, and glove box?
All I have is 1 gray key and a credit card type plastic key that doesn't seem to unlock the doors, the credit card key was in the owners manual. As of right now I just have 1 key without a spare.it has the factory alarm but did not come with key less entry faub.thanks guys

I believe the grey key is the valet key that either isn't chipped or has limited function. I have the original black ones, no grey or plastic keys.

You can have more keys made. I'd have to see a picture of your keys because the "grey" key is a Valet Key used for starting the vehicle and opening the doors, it cannot open the glovebox; I have no idea what you mean by "credit card key."

The problem here is that if you indeed have a valet key, you're going to run into issues having more keys cut/made.

The first thing I would recommend is having a Toyota Dealer or Locksmith who can cut keys via Key Code/VIN make keys for you; because this is going to be expensive no matter what and you might as well have fresh factory cut keys vs. copies of a worn key.

The second thing is that no matter what you'll need the keys programmed to your vehicle for the immobilizer to not lock you out of starting the vehicle. This is where it gets tricky, because you need at least 1 master key to add new keys to the system and at least 2 master key IDs (not 2 cloned keys) to wipe the system and start fresh if you've reached the maximum amount of learned keys. This is where you need to find either a really good locksmith or a Toyota Dealer because you need a factory capable scantool and someone who knows what they are doing to reseed the immobilizer module.

At least this is the correct way to do it. The "Cheapo" way is to get a key cloned, gut the transponder, tape/glue it to the key cylinder and use cheapo keys so anyone can break into your vehicle and drive off with it.

I really do appreciate that explanation of what to do here . the credit card type key was inside the owners manual. It looks just like a credit card but the key itself is made to fold out of the card to be used in the door or ignition, so it says, after it is used it folds back in card to go in your wallet like a credit card.and yes the valet key is the only one I have right now.should I just buy an alarm that has key faub? I was considering one that has a self start option even.?

The gray keys are the valet keys, and the black keys are the master keys, as others have confirmed. According to the owner's manual: "If you lose all your master keys, you cannot make new keys; the whole engine immobilizer system must be replaced." However, when I bought my '07 earlier this year it only came with one valet key, and a local shop (Boulder Hybrids, for those in Colorado) was able to duplicate the key for me. Not only that, it only cost me $30, as opposed to several hundred that a dealer would probably have charged even if they had been able to make a key, which according to the manual, they couldn't. So check around and see if you can find a local shop that can make you a spare key.

They don't need to replace the engine immobilizer, but they have to "ReSeed" it which basically means erasing everything in the module and reprogramming it. Which requires a Toyota Capable Scantool and a connection/validation with Toyota. A good Locksmith should be able to do it as well if I remember right.

I'm not sure then if my local shop re-programmed my immobilizer or not. My original key still works in addition to the new one they made for me, so does that mean probably not?
