Spare tire carrier replacement - how hard?

I need to replace my spare tire carrier - how difficult of a job is that? I called the dealership and the quotes me about $525 for parts and labor, that also includes a new rim on the spare tire.

Parts around around $350 to $375, rest is labor.

I can source the parts out for a little less and I could get a cheaper rim somewhere and pay a bit less to have it swapped as well.

Just curious if anyone has done this themselves yet or not?

Have not replaced mine but the carrier is mounted to a cross member underneath with 4 bolts AFAIK.

That is what I saw from the looks of the diagram. Looks like you can drop the tire, remove the parts and re-install - not sure if there is an alignment trick or not that needs to be done though or if those bolts can be problematic to remove.

I actually had this done in the fall of 2021. I was at the dealer getting new tires/rims one of which was going to be my new spare. they were unable to drop the old tire because the original hoist was seized with rust (9 year old OEM part). the winch hoist is mounted to the cross member but it can be tricky to get to those bolts. As far as the install it seemed to be pretty quick once they actually got the old tire/hoist off

the bolts will likely be difficult to get to and if they are rusted will just add more headache unless you have a nice assortment of tools to help you out. hardest part is going to be the removal of the old assembly

i replaced the one on my 4th gen. it's doable but quite difficult due to limited space. i had to cut my old one and use a thin socket to unscrew the bolt from the top.

Did it on my 4th gen couple of years ago, cable broke and switched it to the chain version. It was a real PITA and took me several hours with cutting wheel and whatnot as the nuts/bolts rusted solid.
