Spare Tire Gone (Stolen?)

Maybe I don't pay enough attention to the tire under the truck because today when I went to buy a new tire for the spare wheel, it was gone.

It had to have been stolen, right? I don't think the line just frayed and fell off while I was driving.

Has anyone else had this happen. Can I replace the wire here to use again, or am I better off getting a tiregate hitch mount? I definitely don't want another wheel stolen with a brand new BFG on it.

You're not the first! You would have noticed if it fell off so you're safe in assuming someone cut the cable and helped themselves to your spare. My spare sits in the back of my truck.
 
Hard to say. But with the rust and corrosion it would surprised me if bit just broke off when you were off road. The t-part of mine that holds the wheel has alot of rust.. Personally I like having it underneath, but I like the look if the rear mounted. You can get a used spare tire cable thing fir $50. A tire gate is going to be $600+.

That's pretty terrible - sorry to see that but it looks like someone helped themselves to it. I figure the cable would be rusted or a bit more frayed had it just sheared off due to wear/age. If it had fallen off you would have noticed, IMO.

I know of a few folks who have had theirs stolen. You can get decent cable locks for the spares which is what I run. They're pretty cheap and will hopefully act as enough of a deterent so that the criminal will move onto the next vehicle. In the end, if they really want the spare, there ain't much you can do to stop them.

As far as replacing the winch, I think you have to replace the whole unit or at least be able to take it apart to replace the cable and end hanger for the spare. In prior cases, I believe folks replaced the entire pulley unit. I'd guess that's a lot cheaper than the tiregate.
 
Was it a factory wheel and tire on that spare? If so the odds of it being stolen aren't as high as if it had a decent tire on the wheel. Cutting the cable is pretty tough to do. I tried to do that on a previous vehicle when the lowering mechanism froze and I was on the trail with a flat.

My 3rd gen has a hole for a lock in the cradle the wheel rests on. I don't have a lock in there but I'm sure it's there for this reason.
 
I don't see how anyone would be able to cut it, with the tire up in position. without dropping the tire, how would you get access to the cable?

altho, it doesn't seem very reasonable that it would just fall off, and you wouldn't notice it...
 
Just found some threads about this. Going to replace the system. The wire is in pretty good shape, so I don't think it just snapped off, but I guess it could have. The tire/wheel were stock. I was getting the BFG to match up with the other 4.
 
Clearly there is only one logical and sane answer to this conundrum: Check under your pillow. If there is a quarter, the tire fairy came at night and took it.
 
That sucks.

I have an assembly you can have off mine if you like. Got a rear tire carrier so don't use it. It is off a 2006 Sport if that makes any difference.

I appreciate it, but I just ordered an updated version of the carrier that uses a chain system instead of the wire.
