Spare tire question 16-17’’

Recently changed my stock 16’s to 17’s and wonder what happens if i get a flat. If i get another 17’’ rim and tire will it go up in the same area as the original spare ? Would hate to have to limp home with a mis sized tire.

You probably want to measure to be sure, but I don't believe there is room for much larger than the small'ish spare that come with the 4runner. It thinks its 235/75/15 or something similar. I don't believe based on my measuring that even a 265/75/16 will fit, and that's just one size up from the stock size.

Except it had 265 70 16’s originally. Will measure if need be but thought someone may have been down this road previously.

Wheel size is irrelevant, overall diameter(tire included) is what you’re looking for. Use an online tire size calculator to see what the equivalent for a 16 is to your desired size.

I had a 265/75/16 under mine with no issue until i added a hitch. Still fit but had to let a little air out.

This. I have 265/70-17 tires on my 4Runner and a 265/75-16 spare under the truck to have the 'same' rolling diameter between the spare and the main tires. Mine fits fine with the stock hitch, fully aired up - though it is tight.

I have no problem with any standard size spare fitting. I can see oversized tires larger sizes etc not fitting in the location. Either Steel or Aluminum rims will fit as well.

to be clear, i had issues with the hitch because it wasn't the factory hitch it was an aftermarket that invaded the spare space.

factroy trailer hitch....running a 265/75/16 KO2 spare on a standard 5 spoke wheel...not the spare that comes with them... fits but is tight.

just a fun heads up...if you have done the TBU...your factory spare wheel will NOT fit...thats why I switched to the 5 spoke for a spare.
you dont have to take my word for it...just try it
of course if you get a flat up front...you can take a rear wheel and put it up front and then put the spare on the back...then I guess your factory spare will fit.

Lol this is why i carry a random 1.25” spacer with me. Pain in the ass

You know that you can put on the stocker and you'll get home right? Ever see sedans with the spare tire and it's a good 2 inches shorter and as many narrower? It still drives ok and will get you to where you need. Now if you are building an overlander that's going to be miles, perhaps days from the next tire shop then getting a full size spare makes perfect sense. If you are not, keep the stock spare and put that $200+ towards something else.

the stock spare wheel ( at least the factory 2000 16 inch spare) will not clear the larger TBU calipers....thats what I was refering too and why I got a wheel that would. Plus now I do 5 tire/wheel rotations. Or like listed above, people carry a spacer to put on when they need the spare up front

Hey. I believe that this is not a critical problem. Perhaps tire pressure can negatively affect the outcome. In such cases, I use a similar device. Which helps to understand the state of pressure in the tires and avoid troubles with uneven pressure in a timely manner.

Good point. I actually swapped over to a Tundra 16" wheel for my spare to fit the Tundra brakes. And got a 'correctly' sized spare tire because I didn't want to trust a 20 year old original to get me home when needed (I'd rather a ~5 year old at the time used BFG KO)

My 265/70/17 in a tundra split 5 spoke wheel fits fine. And, it replaced a 20yo original spare that I didn't trust to hold together on the road

I have a brand new Falken wildpeak at3w (265/75/16) on a factory 3 spoke wheel and it fits fine (factory trailer hitch also).

You do have to wiggle it around a little bit while lifting the spare up but it fits fine. I doubt anything bigger would work though.

I meant for the OP, unless I missed that's he's done the TBU. I've also changed out for bigger calipers but if I do get a flat (never happened yet) I'll just swap out a good tire up front and put my stock steelie in the back.
