Spark Plug Wire Issue-Need Help

Short term lurker and finally decided to join this forum ... So here's my intro as well as my first question.

Haven't done a lot of wrenching on my 1998 4Runner 3.4l 4x4 with 230k on it because I used to work on cars for a living and got so burned out it was just easier to have someone else do it. And besides... Other than scheduled maintenance the only work this truck has ever had to have is 2 starters replaced.

So I've been getting the itch to start wrenching again and decided to replace the spark plugs in my 1998. All went well until I went to put the final spark plug wire on the new plug and it wouldn't seat all the way. The connector clicked on the end of the plug but the rubber cap won't seat all the way down on the valve cover. I checked this wire against another and somehow the connector is a little over 1/2" further down the boot that it should be and it wasn't like this before. How did happen and what can I do to fix it? I tried gently pushing the wire up into the boot and gently tried to work it from the top end of the boot but to no avail. Is there anything I can do to fix this short of buying new wires?

Thanks in advance for your help. John
