spark plugs replaced....

I got my 2006 about 4 months ago...previous owner had mentioned doing all the MX himself and he seemed to know what he was talking about...

Any how I finally decided to go ahead and just do a full tune-up since I'm at 107,000 miles.

Pulled the spark plugs and 3 Densos and 3 NGK's all work down to .065 or worse!



Anyhow...shoulda done it sooner but amazed the runner still went as good as it did. Got 23.5MPG on a highway trip this weekend.....

Fun stuff.

So the previous owner never changed the spark plugs. If they are mixed matched (3 Denso and 3 NGK's), then this is the original plugs since the car was new. I have a 2006 as well and never did find out the reason why Toyota put 3 and 3 of each brand.

I don't think any reason has ever been confirmed by Toyota. I read somewhere that they had contracts with each of those companies to buy a certain amount of spark plugs so they did half and half to fulfill those contracts but that could be a load of crap.

Hmmm come to think of it, that may actually make sense when you think about it. If they are bound by some contract to put Denso and NGK for every Toyota 4Runner, then would have to put 3 of each to fulfill both contracts. This explanation would be the only one that makes some kind of logic, although very odd. This way they fulfill both "contracts" every 4runner is has Denso installed and NGK Installed. But then again, who really knows, but it does make sense to some degree.

It's really because the Sphetzer valve on each canueter bank requires a different phase-plasma ratio to function properly... I hope that you replaced them with the same parts! LoL ;):

My plugs were the same and I remember all of the talk about the contract issue... weird, but not unlikely. My gaps had opened up to between 0.053" - 0.060" at 71,686 miles which is probably right in-line with yours had I let them go another 35k. I replaced mine with Autolite XP Iridiums set at 0.044" and haven't any issues. I do remember noticing that things seemed "smoother" right after I replaced them. Preventative maintenance always makes me feel better!

What? Now i'm confused. are you saying I should have replaced it with 3 Denso and 3 NGK?
