Spark Plugs

Seen a video on you tube about replacing plugs on a 4runner and it said these trucks use a special spark plug with double ground strap but are these regular or platium tip? Does bosch make these plugs?

If you don't wanna be bothered trying to find em(I had to look at a few stores), just go to NAPA and tell em you want 6.

No point in going with expensive iridium tip plugs etc. These are low revving, low compression motors tuned for torque and thus, don't really need or benefit from stuff like that.

I recently did Valve cover gasket and spark plug replacement on my runner and the guy at Napa gave me some NGK single ground plugs. Before I realized it, I had already installed all but 1. So I said F it, I'll just leave them in.
So far it's doing ok..

FYI

my understanding is that if you don't use the exact plugs toyota recommends for this vehicle (eg bosch = wrong) your engine performance will suffer and you will regret it. in this instance aftermarket does not equal better. Just pick them up from the dealer.

I just replaced the plugs on mine today along with the wires. Bought NGK Platinum dual groung plugs and NGK wires. 12 years and 192K miles, still had the original wires but someone had changed the plugs to Bosch single grounds. Truck ran well already but a lot better now. Starts faster, idles better and definitely has a little more power.

Spark plugs need to have dual tips because they fire twice as often as regular plugs --- T4R has a "waste spark" system where one coil is used for 2 plugs.

So, get the right plugs (NGK BKR5EKB-11), they'll last the normal intended life cycle.

I agree with Zcruiser. I have personally fried a Bosch plug in my engine so I won't ever use those again. A single ground NGK or Denso will work ok, but you'll only get 1/2 the life out of them since we do have a waste spark ignition system - meaning the plugs fire on BOTH the compression AND exhaust strokes. I have also found that the dual ground plugs give me better mpgs than any single ground plugs.

I always get my NGK BKR5EKB-11 plugs at NAPA and they are always in stock. Never let a parts guy pick your plugs for any car--there are always lots of listed plugs for any application and they have no clue what is best. Buy what it says in the manual, or ask somebody who knows before you go into the store.

My 4Runner is a 96 SR5 with the 3.4 lt, i'm not changing these but will have a garage do them. The plugs in there now were changed between 55 and 65k which toyota said tuneup should be. My car has 107+k on it so should the wires be changed also? Should i buy the parts myself and have them installed, not going to do it myself. Amazon has the plugs $4.99

How come i only see 3 wires when it needs 6? also my radio antenna is bent so how would i get that fixed?

Probably cheaper if you buy the parts yourself. I bought the plugs and wires for mine on Amazon, just installed them yesterday. It's actually a fairly easy DIY job, took me about 45 minutes or so, including doing the ISR mod while I was at it.

The Plugs looked like they were changed out to Bosch(bullshiat)Single Platnum Tips. When I replaced everything, I noticed the idle in the truck went away. The 4Runner runs smooth as silk and has a little better giddy up(front the seat).

USE OEM Plugs and Wires! You'll thank yourself later.

There are only 3 wires needed. We have 3 coil packs on the passenger side of the engine which go directly onto the spark plugs. From there, the plug wires transfer spark to the other three plugs on the drivers side, therefore only three plug wires are needed.

For your antenna: You can replace the mast which can get expensive (I'm not sure), or swap your entire assembly for the Tacoma whip style stationary type... search for "Tacoma whip mod" for more details.

+1. My wires were original and someone had installed Bosch single ground plugs. The truck was running fine but defintiely has smoothed out and feels a little stronger now. Well worth the time to change things out.

Yes, those are the correct parts. Amazon's "Does it fit" isn't very reliable but you were right to check the part numbers out on your own. These are the same parts I ordered from Amazon for mine, work great.

thanks for the offer but i'm on Long Island, but we do own a house in pocono.
I'm like a bull in a china shop and seeing how much stuff i would need to remove and move it would be a nightmare for me to do it. Only thing i do is change air filter and windshield washer fluid. One time i could not get the tip stick back into the tranning whole and was told at the shop do not go under the hood anymore lol. Did install window deflectors last week and so happy i did . Talked to the shop today and he agreed with the brand parts i'm getting, he said good we don't install crap. I figured with the price of gas and getting higher ( why!) it's time for a tuneup, been around 50k+ since last one.

well amazon is going to take so long to send these that i cancelled the plugs and bought them from auto zone for about $1.50 less per plug but they didn't have the wires. Advanced auto wanted $36+ and seams no one else around me has them so i'll stick with the wires from amazon. No Napa anywhere near me and they are way more than amazon anyway

Well had the tuneup done and the truck is runnning much smoother and for not being high proformance always found the 4Runner takes off when you hit the gas. They replaced the gas filter and now ready for another 50k before tune up again. how often are the wires replaced?
