ive been looking around and cant find a straight answer. I just got my spartan locker in the mail and a friend of mine would like to install it but hes a jeep guy. he says that the ring and pinion doesnt have to come out and installing the locker wont mess with the back lash. is this true? all the write ups ive seen it seems like the whole thing has to come apart.

If it's similar to my 4th gen then yes it's true. Ring and pinion only needs to be disassembled if you're changing bad bearings or re-gearing to say 4.56, 4.88 or 5.29. You just work around the ring. There are 2 (can't remember right term) round disk that sets the ring/pinion on both sides of the ring gear. when you're disassembling mark your starting point with a punch and I would count the rotation as you loosen it up. Also, keep in mind that each side is specific so make sure you lay it out Left and right. There's a lot more steps but hopefully that helps with your question. I looked at youtube, looked at fsm and asked help from member who've done it. My experience, better offroading experience. You just have to change the way you drive on curves.

Not the ring gear itself but you do have to take the whole ring gear assembly to get in the little gears in the middle. I might have misunderstood your question. It took a lot of work. It took us about 5hrs to complete start to finish.

Yeah. LOL! That's what I said and that's why I asked my buddy for help. Now that I've done it. It's not so bad just time consuming and that f*****r was heavy! My buddy had to lay it on his chest and press it up. It's a tight fit. You can save money by taking the whole thing out and drop it off so they can install it properly then you can install it. But might as well do the whole thing yourself. I would think about regearing too as long as it's out if your going to regear anyways. Or juat drop it off! Haha!

Thats right you have to regear the front as well. Forgot about that. I put the locker on my 2wd and made it like a baja.

Here's the actual install process, in case you haven't seen it: https://www.ringpinion.com/b2c/spartanlocker.aspx

And here's a wicked writeup on an Aussie locker install: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-g...-rear-differential-installation-write-up.html That's almost exactly the same process, except with the Spartan you will NOT put the thrust washers back in.

You can totally do this yourself with basic tools. You do not need to know how to set up a differential, and you do not need to mess with the ring and pinion setup. Reading the instructions makes it look scary, but it will all make sense once you get it on the bench and you're looking at it. Go for it.
