Hi, I am replacing the front door speakers in my 03 with the JBL system. I took out the old speaker and there is some kind of white rubber coated thing wired into the speaker and clipped into a built in part of the speaker mount. My question is what is it and do I need to keep it? The new speakers won't fit into the mount with that thing in there. I would like to eliminate it if possible to simplify the install and I'm in a huge rush as I am leaving town tomorrow on a long road trip. Anyone know the answer? Thank you!

if that is the harness that attaches to the upper tweeter, I'll assume that is a passive crossover to keep low frequencies from destroying it. The lower mid-range speaker may also have one as well but I doubt it.
Are you replacing the OEM speakers with aftermarket component speakers? If so, they should come with a passive crossover.

Ok, I am ignorant regarding this stuff. The new speakers are two ways, so they have the tweeter built in. So, should I eliminate the crossover and just disconnect the factory tweeter? I really want to dump that crossover in the interest of time and simplicity. Thanks for the replies!
You've lost me. did you purchase a component set of speakers (where tweeter mounts separate from the full range speaker) or did you buy a set of coaxial speakers where the tweeter is mounted to the center of the full range?
Sounds like you purchased a set of coaxial's. If so, you could keep your OEM tweeter installed but leave it disconnected. You won't need the OEM passive crossover as the aftermarket tweeters will have a crossover/capacitor mounted to the back side of it.

I have to be cautious here as I do not know the extent of your entire stereo system and whether or not it is all OEM, aftermarket or a combination of both. From my readings on this site, the OEM speakers are 2-ohm and I'll interpret the Alpine speakers are 2-ohm as well.
If you try to keep the OEM tweeters connected this would reduce the total ohms to less than 2-ohms, and you may overload the factory radio/amplifier system. The reason I say keep the OEM tweeter installed is simply for cosmetics so you don't have a gaping hole behind the speaker grill as you'd pick up road noise, etc.

I ran 2 ways with the crossovers on the stock amp and they sounded great, but you can run without them.
