Why would you want an open air filter under the hood? It will pull in hot engine air vs the stock which pulls air from the fender and will be colder.

Granted it probably won't make a huge difference. Just my opinion.

This is probably a total hijack, so I apologize, OP. But it's at least kind of on topic. Mikey, what do you think about the TRD PRO intake that Toyota is currently offering on its website as an available a la carte accessory purchase?

I was a little intrigued when I first saw it offered on Toyota's website, but after searching the forum threads, everyone seems to poo poo the whole idea. Do you think this thing really accomplishes nothing at all?

I'm not knowledgeable about cold air intakes at all, so I'm definitely deferring to you and the other forum guys who know a hell of a lot about vehicles and wrenching compared to me. But, at the risk of sounding embarrassingly naive, why is Toyota selling this as an official aftermarket mod if it's useless?
 
I do have the aFe myself. The TRD is good especially for us California people because it is CARB approved. I might be picking one up myself so I can pass smog.

But is there a gain? Ehh it will be minimal and you probably would not even be able to tell. You will get a different noise and the aftermarket look. Why does Toyota and other companies sell them? Because people buy them.

You want my true opinion....if you have the stock intake keep it. Maybe just drop in a fancy filter for a lot cheaper then a complete intake.
 
I have an AFE-CAI also. But I got it less thinking about any gains and more thinking about the reusable filter. At $35 - 40 a pop for paper ones I've used K&N filters on everything since 2000 just to keep from having to buy a new one a couple times a year. It was my first complete CAI system, and no I haven't seen any gains except in noise level when I open it up. YMMV

Any reason the 4Runner configuration would vary results much over a FJ? It is almost 1/3 the price of the TRD CAI.... I admit, for the price I'm curious.

You need a non biased third party dyno run man. All you have to do to see that kind of increase in put a fan in front of the truck during the run with no other changes.

You possibly would get a few hp, maybe, depending on where you are in the rpm band. Hey, it's your money...

Yep, I know your take, read your post back when you wrote it and was part of the great TRD CAI install banning debacle ha. He showed some nice dyno gains in that thread too and it still wasn't enough for a lot of you guys.

I agree, I dare say there is in fact a little to be gained. Hadn't seen this option, so thanks OP.

I'm still holding out hoping the ECM connector fairy visits Gadget and URD... but that's a different thread.

I have a difficult time believing that an air filter could provide half as much increase in torque as what a supercharger can (claiming +68 lbft).

Keep your filters clean (air and fuel), spark plugs clean and quality gasoline. That will keep you running just fine for a long time. Short of supercharging, there isn't much out there that will provide much of a noticeable increase in performance on modern engines.

If it really works, then it will be very expensive.

I agree completely, that's why it caught my attention... that's a heck of a claim.
 
I installed the Spectre intake yesterday. Did feel a little stronger but the sound was well worth the $135 it cost from Autoanything.
 
Sure did. And i would do it again. Swapped on every car I've had. All have increased mpg and throttle response. Sounds throatier as well. So yep switched it for hot air and the above listed reasons.
 
Speaking of science. I am sure you have tested the cold air kits as well as the oem box to determine the actual air temperature of the air inside the intake tube at the throttle body. I am sure we all would love to see the outcome of your own personal research. Please post the numbers so we all can be as educated so we all can make well informed decisions based on research.

I was simply posting my own personal observation with my install. I felt useful firsthand experience may benefit someone who was considering installing this kit.

Ok, you got us, now tell us you we pulling our legs and actually put a Spectre CAI on your 2016 and not one that is drawing hot air (which is proven not as efficient as cold air) from the engine bay!

If you need "proof" the warmer air inside your engine bay is not as dense as the cooler air outside your fender, there is a chance the proof is beyond your grasp anyway. I know some people don't have any faith in science, and choose to disregard sound data.

I don't need to do copious amounts of research to know the warmer air trapped under your hood next to your engine is not as dense (efficient) as the cooler air outside your fender. The reason I don't need to is because every modern auto manufacture has done exactly that, and come to exactly that conclusion.

But if you want numbers. Here you go.

ρ = 1.325 pin Hg / TR

= 2.7 ppsia / TR

= 2.7 (ppsig + 14.7) / (TF + 459.7) (1)

So at 0psi, and an ambient air temperature of 60 degrees at sea level (not to blow your mind, but elevation also changes the density of air) you have an air density of .076 lb/ft cubed.


Inside you engine compartment, with an ambient air temperature of 150 degrees (conservatively) also at sea level and 0 psi. You end up with an air density of .065 lb/ft cubed.

In conclusion, based on magic and sorcery, you get an approximate 15 percent decrease in air density when comparing inside vs. outside the engine compartment.

I won't even address the tubular metal air heater you added to your intake.


But none of the math and science mumbo-jumbo can compare to what you "feel".

All jokes aside, air intakes and performance filters can decrease the restriction of air flow. So if you do in fact feel a gain from the system you used, it is likely due to the volume of air being sucked in. So imagine how much you would feel if you got a good system that pulled in cooler air.... Something to consider.
