Speedo / Tach non-op

This was an intermittent problem. Tach, speedo and odometer non op. Everything else is working. I could disconnect neg batt. lead and reset. Now it won't reset. Acts like a relay or bad connection. Any Ideas ?

Do the dials sweep when you cycle the ignition or they just don't do anything?

They don't move at all. Also the seat belt warning light starts flashing after I hook up my seat belt and goes out when I disconnect my seat belt.

Any Ideas? Will a code scanner pick up problem if there is no warning lights lit? Really don't want to take it to the dealer $$$ :fear:

Sorry, I didn't realize the 4Runners don't do a sweep on start-up... that was my fault. I work on so many Europeans these days I have gotten used to the gauge sweep on start-up.

I don't think a Global OBD-II will pick up instrument panel codes, unless their ODB-II codes and not Toyota codes (like fuel gauge, speed sensor, ect.) But this actually can help you in diagnostics. If there are no lights, this might indicate that those circuits are functioning properly and the 4Runner knows what RPM & Speed its going, but is unable to display that to you.

When you say the Odometer is not functioning, what do you mean by that? Is it blank?

I don't see this happen too often on Toyotas, more so on GMs (Man GMs seem to go through Instrument clusters like candy to a toddler!) but the motors/circuits inside of the instrument cluster have failed. You might want to look and see if there is a shop locally that rebuilds them as it could be cheaper than buying an new or used instrument cluster.

BlackWorksInc thanks for your input, the scanners shows no codes, the odometer just flashes "ODO" trip meter seams to working and I found that the temp gauge is non-op also. I thinks I am off to a Auto Electric shop, good suggestion. Thanks again

I couldn't find a electric shop that could rebuild the cluster. I ended up buying a cluster at a junk yard for $150.00. All good now except my odometer reading is alot higher.
