Speedometer Calibration

I have a '96 2wd V6 4Runner. I got new tires that are larger than the stock size, and now I'm about 8mph faster than what the speedometer says I'm going. Called a dealership and they said there was nothing we could do because the speedometer is run by gears, but looking around in a few threads here it seems that using this product, I will be able to adjust the speedometer. Is the dealership right? Is it not adjustable? Or can this product be used to fix my problem?

I'm not sure, but I believe that only Newer vehicles can be calibrated in such a way. Our Trucks, need to have the gears replaced to bring the Speedo back to stock calibration.......

That should do the trick based on what I have read.
 
I'm not sure but I think digital odometers were a mid-gen upgrade ('99+??). If your '96 has a mechanical gear driven odo this box won't work. My '99 has a digital odo and it would work for me.

who cares how old it is, its already here, and its relevant. good for him for using it.

no. he did search. and good on him for that. actually kind of impressive for a noob. my point was this: there's no reason to revive twelve long dead threads just for the sake of saying "good info, thanks" people on the forum get annoyed at seeing the same things: reviving OLD threads and the unfortunately all too common "what's the best lift?" "what's the best bumper?" "whats the best _____?" threads. starting a new thread thats informative or poses a question that may not have been seen before won't piss anyone off. I (like the rest of the forum) just want to see people do their homework and be self sufficient here. not only self sufficient but contribute to the group with good and worthwhile topics of conversation. if you look at what i said specifically i told him to use old posts and threads for reference but not bother to post in them and revive it. i didnt flame the crap out of him either.

I was doing a quick search on doing a speedo adjustment today and saw this. For sake of stirring the pot, I figured I'd revive this thread. Additionally, you are not the sole voice of every member of this forum, please don't speak on our behalf. Thanks.

Speedometer 10MPH off after LED dash mod

Hey all hate to be reviving an old thread but I recently did the LED dash mod to my 1998 4runner with the stock tire size (huge upgrade over stock look/brightness) however after I finished I noticed my speedometer is reading 10ish MPH slower than what I am actually going (I'm running the stock tire size.) While I had the dash apart, I took the plastic cover off to clean out a bunch of dust that was inside it and accidently bumped the speedometer needle off the plastic tab that holds it at 0MPH when the car is stopped and it fell below the 0MPH mark. Would this cause it to be reading wrong, and is there any way to repair this without taking it in? I hate to spend 200+ to repair a speedo. Thanks!
 
You could remove the needle and clear cover of cluster and turn ignition on so speedo is at 0mph and then install needle on the 0 line.

I took my tach apart to replace a bubbled backer. If I remember right there's a tiny electromagnet, so if you add something that can adjust the resistance you should be able to tweak it very accurately. For the tach I just used an ODBII and stuck the needle where should be while idling, screwed it up slightly so it's not quite accurate but was a pain in the butt trying to finagle it on there.

Also the needle wants to go below the stopper so you cant simply stick it at 0.

Edit: now I think about it, it would probably screw up the odo calculations unless you put the resistor before what ever calculates it? I don't know where the signal comes from, the ABS sensor? Then you could screw up how the ABS works haha, I dunno.

I use a gps to know my exact speed. And it's of about 3mph. So just go slower 3 mph then the speed limit sign.

Since you moved the needle on the shaft, you have to move it back to the correct location. An electronic box like a speedo healer won't help. You need to remove the needle and get it back on in the correct orientation.

How do you remove the needle? I currently sit at 0MPH on idle, it just takes me till 10MPH for it to move above 0MPH on the speedometer and then 10mph on the speedo is really 20mph ect.

So to correct this would I remove the needle and put it on the 10MPH marker when I'm at 0MPH correct the speedometer reading 10MPH slower than the actual speed?

Could I use a bluetooth OBDII reader (I think thats what its called?) to connect my phone to read my MPH? Or is there a cheaper alternative than a GPS? I'm new to mechanics lol

You could get a scan guage but that's not cheap. The ODBII will give you the same info your speedo gets so wont account for bigger tires. I'm sure there's free apps to use your phone's GPS to get the speed but I'm not sure how accurate it is. The free version of Torque (ODBII app) might even have GPS speed.

Personally I'd just get a cluster panel from ebay from the same year and swap the speedo. Or if thats not possible swap the cluster but switch over the board that stores the odo reading. It's been a while since I looked at one. It should be the same year and ideally trim level because different years have different connectors and backer patterns. If you swap the whole cluster it will change your odometer miles which may or may not be allowed in your state.

I know it's OBD not ODB but I always think of old dirty bastard every time I type it and cant help it.

You can pull it up very carefully with a kitchen fork.
 
Remove the needle. And plug the cluster back in and turn on the ignition so the armature of the speedo is on zero. Then install the needle. I'll look today if the needle sits on a pin with ignition on or not. I had a speedo that was off 5mph to the slow. I had a spare speedo so I just matched up the miles and put the other in the 97 puppy hauler.
