Speedometer Calibration

I found a handful of older threads regarding the topic of speedometer calibration and correction after upgrading to a larger tire. Seems like most folks are just living with the issue but I'm having a 5 mph difference. Telling a police officer that my reason for speeding in a school zone was because of my larger tires likely wont cut it.

Is the speedohealer v4 universal still the best option? 4WheelParts says that the speedo cannot be modified on this model. Thoughts?

A 5 mph difference at 30 is odd, mine doesn't get too far off until 50+ mph. I reply on my ScanGaugeII or GPS for accuracy. No idea on SpeedoHealer.

On the topic of the ScanGauge - what all can it do for you? What are some of your favorite features? If I understaznd corrrectly it plugs into your OBDII interface?

Well it's not a "dongle" like something you plug into the OBDII port. It's a little signal modifier box you have to wire inbetween the combination meter and speed signal wire from the ABS.

Around $100 sounds like what I paid, I bought mine on Amazon; make sure you get the Universal unit. I think I gave part numbers in my thread. It's really easy to install.

I say "dongle" because it kind of reminds me of a RaspberryPi lol

Correct, it plugs into the OBDII interface. I bought it to clear codes when I was having trouble with a bad sensor wire that was throwing codes. My primary use is as an accurate speedo and to monitor the tranny temp when pulling my travel trailer. I understand people use it for a lot more but I'm not among those.

So it actually corrects the needle? Does it correct the odometer as well?

It's a personal preference. You can get a scan gauge and slap it on your steering wheel cover. I think they look insanely tacky and ugly. Why buy a (originally) $20,000 vehicle and say "screw it, I'll just place this cheap piece of grey plastic right here." It "replaces" your gauges in a small 4x2 rectangle of cheapness.

I'm a details guy, I would much rather pay more, have more work to modify and alter the original equipment and button it up to where nobody knows I even did anything at all. Those are what I pride myself on when I modify a vehicle. Especially with something I rely on daily.

To me a scan gauge is a bandaid to a bigger "problem" with a fairly easy solution.

Lol I see what you're saying. My thinking with the scangauge is, if I'm correct - can only read diagnostic info that the car gives.

Not sure what the "problem" is you refer to or where you could buy one of these trucks for $20K, my window sticker shows 47k.

Personal preference indeed, how do you monitor transmission temps? Re-set codes?
