Speedometer not working all of a sudden

This morning I noticed that my speedometer wasnt working. It's stuck at 0. It was fine last night. And it started to work again after I had turned the car off for a few minutes but this worries me.

Is this an indicator of anything else going on? Is this a relay or a sensor that could be going bad? Is there a speedometer sensor somewhere that I can check? I looked through the manual but couldn't find anything.

Anyone have any ideas?

I don't know for sure, but it could be a loose speedo cable going to your transmission. I don't know if the 4R is set up that way, but that happened once on one of my older cars and that's all it was. Nothing like an easy (and free) fix. Hope that's all it is.

I dont think that there is a cable. If i remember right, it's an electronic unit.

Still having this issue and cant seem to locate the speedometer anywhere in the 2 manuals I have. The Full Electrical version and the mechanical.

Im more concerned that this is a bigger problem - like the main computer unit but would really love to know where the Speedometer sensor lives?

I assume its a magnetic or electronic sensor somewhere in the drive line. Anyone know how the speedometer works on a 03 4Runner?

Is it still shifting OK? If so, it might be the speedo guage itself. Typically if the speedo is not properly connected to the tranny, it will shift erradically and rougher.

Do a search for speedometer problems as I know that I read about this on this forum awhile back. IIRC there was an internal problem with the speedo gauge on the 03 and 04 models and people were taking them to speedo shops for repair and enduring long waits sometimes with no satisfaction. If you are handy you might try to find one in a wrecking yard and change it out.

Search your repair manual for vehicle speed sensor. IIRC, the speed sensor is connected to the tires and is not connected to the ecu. A unit converts the signal and sends it to the speedo. A good OBD II scan tool will be able to tell if it is the sensor or the cluster . Vehicle speed info is sent to the obd port, If the scan tool pics it up, it is likely the cluster.

Thanks guys - I don't think its the actual speedo and the Tach and all other gauges work fine. I'll check out the Speed Sensor IIRC - that seems to be the most likely problem since its working on and off - usually an indication of an electronic issue.


And the Odo is still turning and getting very close to 100k!

IIRC- if i recall correctly.. sorry for the confusion. I'd hate to have you searching IIRC in the manual.:AK47:

The ODO is linked to a separate system, I believe it gets input from a sensor in the trans.

I know this is an older thread but I'm having the same problem. Every other time a take out the runner the speedo doesn't work. The ODO and tack both work. Were is the IIRC located so I can check it out? Was the problem ever solved by the OP?

It fixed itself... or so it appears. Havent had a problem in over a year.

Of course that means it will probably start up again...

Thanks for the update. Any idea what it could have been. Maybe some dirt in a sensor. I just don't see mine resolving itself without some intervention. I checked all the fuses, disconnected the battery and took apart the dash and check the connector but the problem remains. Any Idea where the sensor for the speedometer is located?

Don't know...its a PITA though. Mine has been off by 15 to 20 mph at times. I was told thy would have to replace the whole unit. 800+ dollars for a dash...really. I just use my tom tom to tell how fast um going.

Update to Odometer, Tach, Temp meter issues.

I know this is a late update but I don't come here often...

I bought a used one on eBay and replaced the whole thing. It was like $100 versus $1k new/installed at the dealer. Real easy to install. Also, it brought my mileage down from 120k to about 75k... which I'm not sure is a good thing.

so bring this thread back to life again.

Today, when I was getting into the truck. I heard this odd ticking noise, didn't know where it was coming from. Then it stopped, so I went back inside.

Came back out a few hours later, started it up and noticed my fuel gauge was spiking back and forth. Shut it off, started it back up and it worked fine. So I started driving along, and noticed that my speedometer isn't working now.

I've tried unhooking the battery, no change.

But I still hear this strange noise inside the cluster, when the key/engine is off. What is that?
