speedometer question with manual locking hubs

I am about to replace my ADD hubs with manual locking ones. Will my Speedometer still work with just my rear? Has anyone done this who can tell me. I am having trouble finding information that is concrete.

I really don't want to have to press out the hubs and bearing, i don't have a press and shops around me always seem to charge a lot. (If there is anyone in Baton Rouge who knows how to do this, I'll give you a $100)

I just completed my manual hub swap. I did end up pressing the bearings and abs tone ring into my 4runner spindles (bought a harbor freight press and sleeve kit for around $200 and did it myself). However, before I did that I just bolted the tacoma knuckles on and wrapped and taped up my abs sensors and ran it like that for a very short time (the bearings in the donor spindles were shot anyway). But if I recall correctly, my speedometer seemed to read fine and my ABS light wasn't even on with the front sensors disconnected and wrapped up and zip tied up out of the way. Again, I only ran it like that for a very short time but it all seemed to work for me. 96 4runner 5speed

I kept ABS in my manual hub swap, so I'm not much help.

It might be a good idea though to disconnect your front ABS wires and see if your speedometer still works, that should give you your answer.

It's probably best to swap the manual hub parts into your ABS knuckle. The ABS tone ring fits on the manual hub spindle. Don't know if ABS requires all 4 wheel speed sensors to generate a signal. But your ABS light will be on if you don't run ABS stuff in the front.

And being that the manual hubed knuckles probably have a lot of miles, it's probably best to put in new wheel bearings, then at that point you might as well swap it over to your ABS knuckles. Also might want to check if you local junior college's have a auto class as they might be willing to press your stuff for learning experiences.

Yes. You're speedometer will not function without the abs sensors. Some people that solid axle swap put a speed sensor in the transfer case and wire it up for the speedometer input.

My wife did that early on in her manual hub swap. no front ABS sensors, they were tucked out of the way. And initially, it seemed like it would work OK with just he rear sensors working. Then it turned out to be a bit flaky. It would read correctly sometimes, then it would just stop working in the middle of driving. Pretty quickly she put a Tacoma (?) sensor in the xfer case and fed the speedo.

And then later when the manual hubs needed new bearings, she had them rebuilt with ABS tone rings and regained functional ABS.

All the ABS fell off my truck when I did the hub swap. All I did was get a Taco speed sensor, with plug and ran the 3 wires up to the cluster, spliced into the cluster wires using the service manual. It was super easy. I had to use the manual because all the diagrams I found online were wrong.

After my speedo became very flaky when I switched to manual hubs w/o abs and still had rear abs sensors, it would start out fine, I'd hit a bump, it would drop out until I dropped below 10mph, get above that and it would drop out on any bump, repeat. Obnoxious.

I installed a VSS out of a Taco. Mossyrocks posted info on Pirate iirc many years ago. When I did it I did a little write-up for my 96, the job was not difficult.

This is not correct. Tacos have a speed sensor in transfer case, runners have a block off plug in that transfer case hole and use the wheel speed sensors to get vehicle speed.

My 4runner is a 2 wheel drive. Can I put the same sensor your talking about in the rear of my transmission?

It may not be the same sensor, but there is a spot for it on the trans output. Look up the part used on a non-ABS equipped 2WD 4-runner with automatic transmission (ToyoDIY.com). You will still need to get a harness pigtail, but that should cross over with a number of other Toyota VSS's.

Yes I noticed the second spot to put another sensor. It’s the gear drive type. I looked it up and the cluster requires a 4 pulse to operate so I ordered a Toyota sensor with a 4 pulse output and should have it a couple days. Hopefully everything works out.
