Speedometer stopped working

Ah gotcha on the solid.
I found the abs bulb in the dash to be important to the abs working, when I swapped back to abs in the 96 it wasn't until I re-installed it that the abs started working. Did not expect that-
have not gone through the schematic so don't know if a fluke because once reinstalled the abs started working. That was with all 4 abs senders though. Re-reading it doesn't appear to be your situation at all.
For the vss it's just a 3-wire plug, forgot what thing I got mine off of out of some junkyard 4Runner so not a vss....pic was in that link for the vss ^
As far as the vss my came out of a 97 taco w/manual hub, looks like:
Dunno if any of this is of interest...
Near the front of the rear drive shaft, where 4Runners usually have a metal plug:
Measured the shaft
32 teeth...

I don't remember how many teeth mine has, but my speedo is DEAD NUTS on with my 315's- checking it against a GPS speed app.
As far as what years have the VSS, its all non-ABS 1st gen Tacomas. Which it basically '96-02. I'm not saying they all do, but I know '03/04 Tacomas had ABS. Maybe the base model 4cyl '03/04 still didn't have ABS.
And then 3rz 3rd gen 4Runners have them as well.

Does it come on different teeth? How do you know how many teeth you need ?

In the FSM it shows that only 2wd 4runners have the speed sensors with the little gear on it. And 4wd have the regular sensor like the one in the spindle.
Also maybe [MENTION=10169]TheDurk[/MENTION] can look at this? Any kinda electrical tests I can do ? Could be a faulty abs ecu ?

Hey, guess what? I just lost MY speedo and I also have a 5-speed rig. I have all four sensors and they ohm out good. ABS reports back sensors are both bad though. You really should put that bulb back and pull your ABS codes. I'm curious. You just need a paper clip. It's all in the FSM which I gather you have.
Anyway, I am pouring over my '99 FSM as we speak. I will keep you informed.

Well, I'm definitely not saying the FSM has a mistake, because I don't know what you're looking at. That said, I know that information is inaccurate. [MENTION=135317]rkntoy[/MENTION] has had 2 or 3 3RZ 4WD 4Runners, and they didn't have ABS. Therefore, no ABS sensors to get wheel speed info from. Therefore, the VSS is in the tcase tail housing.
It sucks to see you have so many issues with your 4Runner man! Mine has been so problem free for me. Wish I could help troubleshoot your issue. That said, why did you eliminate your rear sensors?
Different 4runner where here is a picture each of the speedo sensor on the passenger side of the tranny and one of the worm gear inside the mechanism and last the 32-tooth (I think) nylon speedo gear that I just removed hours ago while in the process of changing the clutch.

I removed the rear ABS when I swapped my axle to elocker. I don't know why. My ABS light has been on since i owned the truck. So I removed it. However my speedo was working! After the wheel bearing fix, its not working. Goes up to 10mph and drops. Prior to this, if i hit a big pot hole it would stop working and id have to pull over and restart the engine.
My cluster only had 3 connectors and not 4. So im not sure why the FSM shows 4.
I have replaced the sensors in the front with used OEM ones. But its still not working. And it does throw a code once in a while p0500.
I have been having a lot of issue with this truck lately. None stop! One thing after another seems to go bad to me. With vibration over 50mph, transmission making noise when slamming through gears..... its beyond frustrating !

Look in Vol 1: Diagnostics, under ABS--PreCheck. If you don't have it, I'll look it up for you.

The ECU gets the speed signal from the gauge cluster. It is almost guaranteed that you will get P0500 when your speedo isn't working. There is some logic for the amount of time and/or engine starts without seeing a speedo signal that it will throw the code. Fix the speedo and P0500 will go away.
As the TheDurk said, you will need to get the ABS bulb back in there and see what codes the ABS system is throwing. There may be something beyond just the wheel sensors that is wrong.

There are definitely 4wd 3rd Gens without ABS. Its why they make part #90560-52001

The plus train on the SP1 (from speedo I think) should be something you can read with a meter while driving. If your meter has a HZ setting you should see a frequency proportional to your speed. If it's not on the input to the ECU than look for the pulse on the black with lavender wire on the instrument cluster coming from the abs ECU. If the pulse isn't present at the abs ECU........
