Speedometer stopped working

No, I have not yet gone hands on on this. Weather permitting, maybe tomorrow. Iffy forecast. Where in NJ are you?

I’m in Toms River. I’d be more then willing to drive to you and try to figure this out together if you’d like. Ofcourse if there is time available.

I'm in Basking Ridge. Let me get up to speed (hehe) on mine first. Then if it makes sense, sure. I'm retired, I have time. Weather is a different story.

Once the weather clears up. Im going to reinstall the ABS and fallow the FSM. I know I will get codes for the rear ABS sensors. ( but it was working with just 2 front ones ).

Sorry, had to catch up on my lawn mowing once the sun came out. I'm building a signal tracer with a NOID light that I hope will work.

I haven’t had the chance to mess with the abs bulb and code. With rain and work!!! Really want to get this fixed. I’m gonna try this week to pull the codes.

Looks like the codes I have are. 31,32,33.34. It was flash/flash/flash pause for 2.5 secs then flash. Indicating 31. Then same thing but after the 2.5 pause it was 2 flashes....

The speed sensor test. The abs just kept flashing like a blinker ....

That looks like it's not seeing any wheel speed sensor.

I understand that it will show codes for the rear abs. Because they aren’t there. But the front ones are hooked up. I’ve replaced the front ones with used oem sensors. They looked a lot better and cleaner then my old ones. But still nothing. I had a newer odometer from another 4runner. So I hooked that up. But it still did the same thing. 10mph then the needle drops to 0. The scangauge registered some mph until the needle drops to 0.

Wondering if this could be a ABS ecu issue.

When I was checking the “speed signal sensor” the abs light was flashing like a blinker. I did not do the deceleration rest however.

The ABS codes are "before" the gauge cluster / odometer. If the ABS ECU is reporting those errors, it probably isn't a problem with the gauge cluster.

I suppose it is *possible* that the ABS ECU itself is bad. It is pretty easy to get to in the passenger kick panel.

As a start you could Ohm out the abs sensors and make sure there is some sort of resistance.

You can also check continuity of the sensor wiring back to the ECU.

It may also want to see all 4 sensors to reset.

Is there a reason why when you search 97 tacoma vss on eBay. They don’t show any with the teeth ?
Those are all ABS wheel speed sensors. Apparently those are referred to as a VSS as well. Not what I would call the part, but oh well.
Search "Toyota 83181-12020" on eBay to find what you're really after.
The OEM unit does not come loaded with a gear- some aftermarket options do.
Mine is a 28t, and my speedo is dead on with my 315/70R17 KO2. 28 tooth is just what happened to be on the VSS when I got it, but I think that's the smallest gear available- which will make your speedo as "fast" as possible.
Here are part numbers for the various gears-

So if you get one without the gear. Then you need to source the head correct ? It also shows some that are electric kinda like the abs sensor.

Yeah. It's like searching for tail lights, for example- you're probably gonna have some '85-89 and '90-95 results pop up as well.
And yeah- if it doesn't show the gear at the end of the VSS- you'll have to buy that separately.
This is the 28t part-
