Speedy's 13WL 231mm Brake Upgrade

A few teaser pics until I can get the video edited together and uploaded. I can't tell much difference in the brake pedal and the brakes feel great. Bed them in and they're awesome. The first pic is the bleeder tool I built. Whoever thought of that is a genius.

I'm working on the install video and will post it up in the next few days.



Cleared my Level 8 MK6 16x8 wheels.

Decals make the calipers look awesome! To me this is like a big brake kit for the 4Runner so it's a performance upgrade and deserves a sporty look.

First post updated with the brake upgrade installation video. Now to start editing together the 2" lift vid. The video includes how to build the brake bleeder tool. I can break that out as a separate video if enough folks need it and don't wanna watch the whole install.

Everyone that wanted decals as of last Friday should have them now. I have a few sets left if there are folks still wanting some.

Speedy. And all who did this tundra brake upgrade. I'd like to know besides the fix against warping rotors. How does it compare in stopping power wise. Does it have a better grab? Improve stopping distance?

My brakes are fairly new and does not shimmy at the moment. But if it improves stopping distance. I may upgrade. From my logic. Since the rotors are the same width. But only thicker. It would better dissipates heat. Especially for bigger tires.

But I don't think it would improve in itial grab and stopping distance unless the calipers are that much better. If it does ill look into upgrading.

It does. The caliper and pads are larger.

You can come drive mine w/ 285 75 16 tires and see for yourself if you'd like.

I noticed better braking performance, not from a "bite" perspective but from a "feel" perspective. The "bite" will depend largely on what pads you use and I just used a standard every day street pad. My stock brakes were hurtin' so I noticed a lot of improvement just from the brakes being new.

I bought a set of 231mm (13WL) calipers off a 2006 Sequoia from a local salvage yard. Thanks to your set of videos on the TBU, I have the confidence to tackle this project...and do it correctly. I've cleaned and prepped the calipers/pistons over the last week and rebuilt them this afternoon (seals, boots and retaining clips). I had no clue how many miles were on the used 13WL calipers, so figured a rebuild was in order before install.

As soon as the caliper paint (black) arrives, I'll be painting then installing them on my 2002 Runner this weekend. I'm doing the rear drums (shoes, wheel cylinders and drums turned) at the same time, including Russell speed bleeders all around.

This is my first mod and you've been a big part of it. A big thanks for taking the time to document and share your knowledge!

Thought this was a good place to post a question.

Your rebuild video is awesome and covered pretty much everything. However my slide pins were pretty corroded so I cleaned them up to find minor gouges and one is slightly bent. I've checked a few different OEM parts websites and can't find a good diagram for all the parts for the 231mm brakes with part numbers.

Anyone know the part number for the slide pins, or if it is okay to just clean up the gouges, get them smooth, and use slightly bent pins? I really doubt it and I'd rather get new ones.

I followed Speedy's video 2 yrs ago. you can find the pins on Amazon, assuming you search for 2005 tundra brake pins, or I'm sure Toyota has them. you could probably straighten the pins in a vice sufficiently too.

Hey speedy I realize this is an old thread but I was wondering if you were still selling the decals? I’m thinking of doing the tbu and spraying them black with white decals. I tried to pm you but I’m not sure it went through? Maybe because I’m still new here idk?
