Not sure about the 4runner, but my Sienna's NAVI system does indeed play DVDs with the parking brake engaged.
Aren't there mods out there to allow OEM NAVI to be used while moving? I have not done it because i have not found a profound need to do it. If i need to operate the NAVI part of it, then i stop and do it.
Did your OEM NAVI quit after warranty expired?? A few years back, i did my research on the Eclipse NAVI and heard a few stories about it's screen failing and that its screen was fragile to repeated touch (due to touchscreen). I think that it was an Eclipse...i know that it was touchscreen like OEM.
The audio portion of the Eclipse is better in what way?? I like my JBL unit because it has treble, mid, and bass adjustments along with ASL (automatic sound leveler) and Surround mode. As you know, most JBL system have a separate amplifier. Did you have the JBL system on your 4runner?? You did not have an issue connecting the Eclipse to the JBL system??
As far as I know, the 4Runner OEM navi does not allow DVD playback. I also didn't know that the Sienna's does though. Interesting.
There is a procedure that allows the early generation OEM 4Runner navi sytems to be used while in motion. It involved pressing a series of "hidden" buttons on the corners of the touchscreen to access a service menu. Unfortunately, this procedure doesn't work on the newer versions. However, you can buy a module that allows the newer versions to be unrestricted while in motion, but it is expensive and it does't work as well as you'd think. A friend of mine installed one and when he loses the satellite signal, the vehicle speed sensor doesn't allow the vehicle to keep tracking as it did before his mod. I much prefer the ability to ground the parking brake wire and have 100% full control at all times, the way the Eclipse unit allows.
Yes, my navi broke after the warranty expired. That's why I looked for a replacement. After a good bit of research, I learned that the OEM unit is made by Fujitsu, the same company that puts out the Eclipse. Actually, the Eclipse is pretty much exactly the same as the OEM unit. All functionality works the same and even the screens look the same. I'm sure the touchscreen is the same as well since both units are made by the same company. I haven't heard about any problems with either.
If you look into the specs of the 6620, you'll see that it is basically an audiophile system compared to the JBL in the 4Runner. I'm not an audiophile kind of guy, so I don't use anywhere near the capabilities of the unit, but I can see it being a plus for the guys who love to tweak their music. As far as connections, you can buy a custom harness that makes it 100% plug-n-play, which is what I did. It was $50, but it was well worth it. Besides, the entire unit was less than $1000, so I see it as a screaming bargain compared to the OEM unit. Also, since it's the same thing as the OEM system, the steering wheel controls plug right into the back of the unit, just like the OEM unit.
