Sport Hood question.

Lately I've really been liking the sport hood look. When I bought my T4R it had acid rain, scratches, and bird **** on it. Basically the only downside cosmetically on my car. Anyway I saw on ebay you can buy a pre painted sport hood for $200. What is usually a fair price, and what places do decent, to get this thing painted black? My guess is that the Toyota Collision centers are a lot, but I've also never got body work done. How does maaco rank? What about other?

Not sure about the quality of hood you mention but I wouldn't let Maaco any where near my rig for anything. Budget shops deliver budget quality and that does not work foe me.
 
Any body shop can do that. Having a piece of the vehicle makes it really easy for them to work with. Body work gets rough when you have to work on the truck.

Pick one, drive in with the hood and they should be able to match very close.

MAACO is decent. \Get the clear coat....
 
i agree, love the sport hood. ive ordered body panels from that carpartswholesale (if thats what you're referring to) and they were a little hit or miss. some lined up well, some didn't and looked like crap even when adjusted right. although this was on a 78 bronco, i should have just gone to a junkyard.

might be harder to find a 4th gen in a yard locally but im keeping my eye out. sometimes salvage parts pop up on ebay... personally i would look for something like that so you know its oem. $150-200 would get a primered hood looking real good. its simple to spray, i would guess oem paint would be the expensive part and black is really hard to match.

I got mine on ebay. Its aftermarket but it fits great.

It came prepainted as well. Still had to order the scoop accessories separately.
 
I'm seriously going to pursue this project haha. I got 3 quotes between $200-$300 to paint it. So I'm going to need the hood, hood scoop parts, and insulation? I'm new to hoods so this will probably be a good learning experience for me.
 
My Hood came prepainted. The seller had an option of OEM Toyota colors to choose from. The total was like 550 delivered. The paintjob is decent.

Seeing how my natural white is fading and rusting in some spots, Icould care less.

I got my parts from partznet.
 
I found my OEM hood complete with the scoop parts, insulator, and even the shocks from car-part.com. I paid $300 for it shipped, and $250 to get it worked on and painted perfectly. the shop took a small dime size dent out of it and filled in all the rock chips before painting. It came out like factory.

I would try to go that route if I were you. I don't know much about aftermarket parts on Toyotas, but from my experience on previous car that I've had, aftermarket never fit the same as OEM. And if you still have to buy the scoop insert and insulator, you're going to be around the same $$$ anyways. Good luck with the upgrade. :cheers:
 
I miss my sport hood, but don't miss the glare off of it in the morning (I'm 6'5" and the sun would glare off the bump right in my eyes every morning)

Stay as far from maaco as possible. $108 is very cheap, but shipping will probably suck on that. I would look into the prepainted option that Javelin did
 
Keep in mind that the plastic part on the hood scoop fades quickly. So consider this an added cost over time for repaint.
 
Do the 2003-2005 and 2006-2009 have the same hood? I'm probably gonna just buy it off car-part. So far i've found 2 painted already and are oem w/ scoop. One is for a 2006 and the other, an 03.

no there different. they changed the headlights and grill in 06 which in turn makes the hood different from and 05 and older.
 
The hood is the same. I have an '06 grille on my '03 and the only change was shortening the bottom. The '06 grille just mounts different from the '05, the hood is no different.

The '06 grille covers part of the hood where the '03-05 grille tucks under the hood but the bolt holes are all the same.
 
I wouldn't get too horny about OEM for body panels. With the CAPA approval process, aftermarket body panels that comply are sure to have a factory like fit.

My truck currently has a CAPA approved fender and i'll give $100 to anyone who could tell me which one it is. I'm not actually giving anyone 100 bucks but my father is about as anal and obsessive as they come and he was surprised with the fit.

At first I wanted OEM but the body shop guy recommended a CAPA approved fender and I wanted to save money so I agreed. In the end tho, do you really think he would have recommended a fender that he was going to have to curse at and fight with just to look like ****?

The hoods are the same from 03-09. The one I bought came off an 04 and fit my 07 perfectly.
