The WRX is a really fun car, and will get you lots of attention. I think I paid around $28,000 for mine. The STI is a lot more fun but your looking at around $35,000 until everything is said and done for that.
It depends on what he wants though. If he's only going to have one car, he doesn't want rwd.

Now he has the AWD Turbo Legacy 2.5L GT (same setup as the STi)....already doin mods to it...
There is nothing like an All-Wheel-Drive launch from a dead stop.....you'll even get the same great launch in wet weather...
....one of the reasons I bought an 05 4Runner was the full time AWD...now if I can just find a way to supercharge this darn thing!

I love Supra's. There are a bunch of cars I would really like to see brought back. Mainly the Supra TT, RX7 TT, and the 300zx TT. These companies keep screwing up though. Mazda especially. What were they thinking with the RX8?? Sure it looks pretty good but it's really lacking in the power department. I'm not very impressed with the 350z either.24runners said:

I agree....mazda and nissan cut the balls off their sports cars with the rx8 and 350z (no turbos)....who wants a mid 200hp v6 that you have to spend $$$$ to get good power out of (=turbo kit)....before all it took was a few minutes and a $5 manual boost controller and you had over 300hp.
the 350z gets out handled and out performed on the track by a stock Toyota Tacoma XRunner *haha*
and the guy in his 6spd altima would be laughin next to the guy in his 350z...nissan brought the 300zx down a level with the 350z in my opinion...
i'm glad toyota just stopped making the Supra instead of making the next gen Supra a ~250hp "normal" car like nissan and mazda

I have a 350Z currently and really like it. btw, I've owned 3 Rx-7s (last one 93 R1), 2 Z's, a Porsche 944 S2 and Porsche 928 S4. The Z is in between the 944 and 928 as far as performance. The engine provides the right amount of power for me at my age (42) and the car sounds awesome.
btw, it is for sale 2004.5 touring DB MT 6.5k miles for $27,500. Replacing it with the 4Runner I just bought.

I will say this though...there is a twin turbo kit for the 350z that turns it into what it should have been from the factory
it will cost you a pretty penny...but it will THEN be a FAST machine worthy of the Z name!I would compare the 350Z to the RX8...but not the 300zx or the rx7

My vote is an R32.... for obvious reasons.
250hp, Awd, 18s, 13.2" rotors, sport seats, bored out VR6 running 11.1 compression AND, they only brought 5,000 to the states... Do me a favor and get him to find and drive one. They did something right with this car. If he wants something that will handle like no other, this is the ticket. If he wants something to go fast in a straight line, tell him there is nothing better than a Japanese Turbo'd car, but with minor mods... this thing will eat modded STIs and Evos on a track any day of the week. Email me if you want more info or anything.

I owned an e36 M3 for 7 yrs and sold it a few months ago. Regular maintenance was taken care of by the dealer for the first 3 yrs and even then, I did oil changes, brake bleeds, etc in between. Modifying it can get expensive for little gain if you don't do your homework. There are a lot of useless "bling" out there for the M3 but there are some very good tuners that can point you in the right direction. Maintenance isn't much worse than any of the other cars you mentioned.
ps. My M3 went to 60 in about 5 sec and handled like a go kart.

LOL + ROFL at the guys calling E36 M3's unreliable and expensive to maintain yet then recommending high-performace versions of VW Golfs as alternatives.
My top pics in this price range:
C5 Vette (can be found in this range if you look, fairly reliable, huge aftermarket support, LS1/LS6 are GREAT motors with plenty of bolt-on potential. But only 2 seats.)
MKIV Supra TT (will be higher mileage in this price range, huge aftermarket support, massive bolt-on power potential, bulletproof motor. But also getting on in the years)
E36 M3 (Typical German car stuff....motor is reliable, but the rest of the electrical system/engine accessories can be gong-show. Looks cool, handles great, smooth engine....not crazy power, but solid power. Again, great aftermarket parts selection. Fairly pratical as a daily compared to others.)
Of course, if you want something newer, possibily with a warranty and such, you'll have to be looking at 350Z's and the like, but these would be my choices.
PS: Very nice cars to everyone that has posted their own rides in this thread :bigok: Particularily that silver M3.....that's a fuckin hot car.

Turbo Supra isnt too expensive to keep up...IF you leave it stock *LOL* but, just like me, its SO easy to get hundreds of more horsepower out of it, you just CANT leave it alone *haha*
and a modded supra can be very expensive to keep up

Well I am kind of partial to the Corvette Z06, but I am not sure the 01's have dropped to that price range yet and the 01' had oil consuption issues.
The 02's I am sure have not dropped to that price range yet.
If you can find an 01' though that has been re-ringed, they rock. low to mid 4sec 0-60 1.04g lateral acceleration and the stock F1 supercar tires are the best non-R compound dry tire out there.
Just a another little tidbit on the Z06, its suspension is designed after the F1 cars, with a mono leaf spring in the rear and the Z06's rule the autocross courses (pre Lotus Elise).

My M3 was reliable for the 6 yrs it served as a daily driver. Maintenance was probably less than most cars on the road and even less if I didn't track and autox it. I had zero problems with electrics and I don't know many owners that did.
The C5s can be had in the price range stated but the Z06 is holding its value pretty well. The C6 looks like a supercar.
