Spring break ideas

So my wife and I are both teachers and we have the week after Easter of for spring break. We tried getting reservations for camping in the beach in Carlsbad a few months ago but it dad booked.

We just looked at Sequoia national park but it seems most of the reservation campgrounds are not open that early.

We've got a two year old and four year old. Any ideas on a good camping trip within a day's driveof San Diego?

Camp Pendleton San Onofre campground:

San Onofre Beach Campground MCCS Camp Pendleton

It's a little north of Carlsbad. I'm in the military so I have direct access, you would have to go through these base access procedures here:

I've been planning to go there actually within the next month or two myself. I was going to call to get details or just drive up there myself and just check it out to see if I liked it. We intend to just camp on the beach with some friends and paddle board/volleyball during the day and play some poker or cards against humanity at night. They have showers/bathrooms and stores around the area. I don't know if it's free to just camp on the beach or if you take a "RV/Camp site" for our vehicles. They have a small map on the website or you can just google map it.

julian, idyllwild, mojave national preserve (might be hot, but still bearable; lots of roadside camping), santa barbara (tons of camping in los padres NF), SLO/los osos, alabama hills (BLM), cerro gordo ghost town, valley of fire SP (north of vegas; again, may be hot; some BLM land outside the park if the park's two sites are full)

My GF is on spring break so we just went to Joshua Tree for 3 days and Anza for 1 day on the way back. It was awesome! JTree even has a few very mild 4x4 trails to explore and since most people can't use them, they're almost empty.

Most of the campsites at JTree don't take reservations and they fill up right away (between 9am-11am) so we stayed in BLM land, just outside the park the first night, then went into the park early to get a spot.
