Springs/Struts replaced on a daily driver

I'm taking my 2002 (97k) on a family road trip Sunday and have noticed that the ride is at little rougher than it used to be. I crawled under and looked at the struts and found them to be the originals. Since I need this done quickly and won't have the time or access to an area to work on it, I figured I'd just get bent over and pay someone else to do it. I have some questions. This is a daily driver (mall cruiser) that only really leaves the road to go camping/fishing. I don't plan to lift it. So...

Are there some struts (brands or models) to avoid?

Should I replace the springs despite not having any noticeable sag?

Is there a reason to avoid a Goodyear, Firestone, Midas type of place?

Any estimates on how many labor hours this should take?

I guess I asked too many questions. I've looked up threads on this but only found suggestion with lifts or for those with sag.

So how 'bout KYB or Rancho Struts? Anyone use them or avoid them?

Your big issue is going to be the time frame here. You don't necessarly have any time to shop around and get a set of good aftermarket shocks online. However based on the description of your driving it's not that big of a deal. Especially if you aren't gonna lift and do tires etc... You can get a quality set of shocks that will work very well for your daily driver at a local place.

You are in the seattle area I'd give Les Schwab a call as they have some decent shocks there for a DD. If you want a little more performance or something you could see if anyone in your area carries the bilstien shocks and get those put on. But I don't see a need if you just keep this on the road and only light wheeling for camping/fishing.

As for time... any good shop should have this done in maybe 3 hour Tops since they have all the tools. Compressing the front coils are the time consumer here... and maybe that damn top shock bolt on the rear.

I wouldn't worry about replacing springs with only 97k if you have no sag...

KYB or Rancho would probably fit your needs. The stock 4runner is actually a very capable off-road vehicle. A lot of people have needs for bigger tires/suspension lifts, etc. Buy based on your needs and time-frame. If you get either of the two you mentioned it won't be that expensive and if later you find you need something else, research lifts/tires, etc. and save your money for that. It is fun to work on your own vehicle but if that is not an option now, maybe it becomes one in the future.
I guess I say all of that to say, buy what you need and can afford for now. Good luck,

On second thought, I think I will hold off on changing them until after the trip. Then I can order some shocks and struts and install them when I have some time. I'll still need to go to a shop to have the front struts loaded,(I don't want to mess with spring compressors) but at least I can spend a day working on the ride and save some cash.
