'spronggg' sound from driver front side?

Hi All,

I was backing out of a parking spot this afternoon and while I was turning the wheel, I heard a distinct 'SPRONGGG' sound (lasted about 1 second) that sounded like a heavy spring deloading all of a sudden, coming from slightly above the accelerator area behind the firewall. At the moment it happened, the slip indicator on the dash (amber warning marker with a graphic of a car with wavy lines trailing) lit up for a split second and went away immediately. This is the second time I heard that 'SPRONGGG' sound while turning the wheel. I was still turning the wheel both times (meaning I hadn't yet reached the limit of steering wheel travel).

Any idea what this is and whether I should be concerned? The car drives perfectly fine, so not sure how serious this would be.

I am driving a stock 2017 SR5 with 1,350 on the odo.

You probably put it into drive before you ceased rearward movement. The noise you heard was the VSC kicking in preventing roll back when you are in drive. This is for starting out on a hill. Make sure to stop before putting it into drive.

Hm...I'm pretty sure I hadn't yet moved the shifter into drive, but I suppose it could be possible...are there any other potential explanations?

The sound I experienced was not a clicking sound, more like striking a heavy spring under tension with something.

The sound I experienced was not a clicking sound, more like striking a heavy spring under tension with something.

To see if it is the same sound, either duplicate what I mentioned above by putting it in drive before you come to a complete stop while backing or find a steep hill that will cause you to roll back a bit while in drive. This will kick in your VSC and give you that strange sound.

I wouldn't describe the noise as a clicking, but more of a spring sound.
