Squeaking when breaking.

2017 SR5P with 49k on the clock. Recently been having some squeaking that sounds like it’s coming from the rear wheel. It only occurs when braking and after I’ve been driving for a minute. Dealer inspected everything and says the brakes are fine. Inspected the suspension and said it was fine. They thought it was the rear diff idk why but it was fine. Front pads are at 4.5 and rear are at 5. Dealer said they could not replicate the sound. When I was driving home there it was. Any ideas? Should I just go ahead and replace the brakes? They quoted 916.24 all around.

Is the metal indicator on the pads scratching the rotor? I guess $900 will include rotor replacement for all 4 but based on your mileage I don’t feel it is necessary if there are not warped. I replaced my pads at 60k and rotors are perfectly fine.

My 2016 squeal too from time to time others have reported it as well and the dealer said the same thing. I am not too concerned except for the looks I get at the shopping centers.

Just put some new Toyota pads in with new springs. It's an easy job and won't cost $900. The squeaking can be caused by something on the pads causing uneven friction and therefore vibration. The spring could be damaged and not preventing the pads from vibrating. I'm sure other things. Unless your rotor is screwed up somehow, new pads/springs ought to fix it.

If you don't like squeaking, don't get another set of toyota dealership supplied pads. I had mine replaced last fall and they squeak for the first few minutes of driving every day. I've seen others comment that they have the same issue with new 4R's off the lot. That leads me to believe it is a pad engineering issue.

Toyota dealers sell two different types of Toyota branded pads for the 4Runners. The cheaper ones (TCMC, have a "Z" in the part number) are to compete with "CornerBrakeShop" and are junk and often generate noise. The slightly more expensive ones are the OEM replacements, which are pretty durable. If you don't ask, they will likely install the cheap ones.

Glad to see this info... Just bought my 2016 Trail as a CPO vehicle in March and the squeaking brakes are driving me crazy. They were replaced by the dealer when serviced before sale. Sure they used the cheapo version pads.

Guess it is time for new pads. :thumb:

Here's an example of a not-so-cheap "Service Special" but with cheap parts from a local dealer (Stevinson Toyota). The sad thing is that the good pads are just $6 more when they are charging the customer almost $200 for the labor. I guess the cheap ones will get the customer back sooner.

Could be gone after keep driving for a while. My 2019 rav4 hybrid was squeaking, but now it's good. I think it's about quality of factory rators and pads, not good enough:spam2:.

I hate Stevinson so much, they're even worse than the CO Springs dealers.

Ok, I bought a new set of OEM pads and will get them installed when they show up. I'm hoping this solves my squeaking. Does anyone know what the part numbers are for the cheap pads? Below are the parts numbers for the pads I bought.

Front pads- 04465-60320

Rear pads-04466-60140

I just replaced all corners last January with Wagner OEX ceramics so no dust and not much rotor wear. About $130 for all.
No problems and no noises. Drove from S Florida to northern Michigan and daughter drove it from Michigan to San Diego, no noises.

Glad the noise is gone and yes, those are the good quality OEM pads from Toyota.
