Squeaky Brakes

I had brand new brakes installed in July 2020. They have been totally fine until recently. When it's wet and cold they seem to squeak loudly for the first few minutes I drive it every morning. Had a buddy with a Tundra tell me the same thing (his brakes were new in Feb 2020).

I assume it's the weather/temp but is there anything that can be done? It drives me crazy when coming to a stop hearing the LOUD squeak!

Two thoughts.
1. OEM brakes are soft, wear faster, and leave more brake dust, but are quiet. After market brake pads, sometimes called "metalic", tend to be harder, last longer, but are prone to squeaking or squealing. Many of the brake shops or repair shops sell the latter as "life time" brakes.
2. When replacing brake pads, it is important to put some high temp grease on the back of the pads to cushion them and prevent squeaking. The squeaking is a metal to metal rub. Did they do that when they installed the new pads?

No squeaking when they were first installed. i just noticed it AFTER it got wet and cold. They were replaced by the dealer so I assume they put OEM pads on the vehicle.

I 2nd on the brake grease...

i installed new rear pads back in Oct. they were fine for about 3 weeks...then they made themselves heard when they got warmed up.

Itll go away...no worries. I would make sure you perform an undercarriage wash when you take it to the carwash...to make sure that brake dust gets cleaned out of there as good as possible...

I mentioned it to my service advisor on my 1st oil change (12 mos/4900 mi) last month. He said Toyota was aware of the problem and was working on a solution.

To date myself I had to apply a paste between the disk brake pads and a thin piece of metal periodically to stop brake squeal. That was on my 1970 TR6 and my 1967 Austin Healey. Had to apply the paste every 6 mos or so.

My wife and I both have 2020 4Runners, mine has 1600 miles and hers has 7000 miles. This is our first winter with the trucks and they both squeak every cold morning for the first minute or so of driving. It’s flipping loud too lol.

Shitty toyota pads. I had mine replaced at the stearlership a year ago and through all weather conditions they squeak for the first few minutes of driving. This is the only vehicle this has done that, aside from when it is damp out and the vehicle has been sitting to allow rust to form on the rotors.
There have been several threads on it in here and the consensus was that there are two OEM spec pads, one squeaks and the other does not.

Had a similar issue on my wife's 2015 , pervious owner had the dealer replace the brakes and they used Metallic pads (maybe OME - maybe not) but they also re-used the antisquel "shims" which were highly corroded from 5 years of Michigan winters. I tried to clean up the shims and use brake grease which helped but still didn't go away till I replaced with OEM pads and Shims on all 4corners, now silent as a mouse.

Since the previous owner had paid for it I didn't feel to bad, in your case, not fun having to pay for things twice.

I agree with comments above. I replaced both front and rear rotors (OEM)/pads(Akebono) two years ago. I made sure I put brake parts lubricant. No squeal, squeaking or noise...

I changed my pads recently, and placed the brake pads wear indicator on the wrong side. It caused a loud squeak. Make sure the wear indicators are on the piston side of the brake caliper (inner side of rotors).

If they reuse the same shims this can sometimes happen. I always replace with new ones. Sometimes they fail to clean well and grease the caliper pins also.

Just had my first service done on my 2020 Limited (8000km) and my brakes had a very loud squeak when the vehicle was cold. Showed the main tech a video, and he diagnosed that it was a backing plate on the rotor that was scraping against it, they just re-adjusted it and now all is fine.

There are two types of Toyota brake pads: Toyota Factory (OEM) and Toyota Complete Maintenance Care (TCMC) components. The latter have a “TM” in the part number. These are sold to be competitively priced compared to aftermarket and IMO are not good quality.
The OEM brakes are very good and last a long time if you take care of them. I’ve got 113k on my originals.
Since there’s money to be made, most shops will recommend early replacement of the pads, install the inferior quality ones, and do a poor job overall making your new pads worse. What mechanic is going to waste time to clean rust, inspect shims and the abutment clips?
Even watching YouTube vids from certified mechanics, they rarely talk about checking disc runout even after turning or replacing discs.
I wouldn’t recommend greasing the backs of pads either.

Update for 2021 Toyota. It still happens for this year as well .
Toyota does not have TSB released for 2021 model so owners should wait.
