Ok, So i have have my 4runner for almost two years now and I have had to replace the front break pads once, but not the back. It is an 04 SR5 with about 105K miles on it. When I got the 4runner it only had about 80k miles on it.
A couple months ago while driving with the windows down I noticed a squeaking noise coming from the tires. HOWEVER, the squeaking noise does NOT happen when you push the brakes! It only happens when your driving down the road and as I drive faster the noise gets faster and louder. I have determined that the squeal is coming from the rear wheels (the ones with old brake pads.) At first I thought it may be the brake pads but I didn't think they would squeal if I'm not pressing the brakes. I have read threads on here about seized calipers, replacing rotors, replacing pads, and other problems but none sound familiar to my problem. My dad has said that its got 100k miles on it and it's gonna squeak no matter what but I really can't stand to listen to the squeal anymore. It's getting to be embarassing when you can hear it coming from a mile away!!
Any suggestions or experiences with this would be great. I'm not a real grease monkey when it comes to this but I do know how to change a tire and other tasks. If there is anything I can do to avoid spending $1000 on it I will gladly attempt it! Thanks!
