SSO High Clearance problems?

I have had the Southern Style Offroad winch bumper with the high clearance installed for about 3 months. I have started to get movement on the driver’s side wing. The movement is causing it to bump against some remaining fender and fender liner. The noise is quite noticeable inside of the vehicle. Tomorrow I’m going to trim off some more fender liner to see if it stops the noise. The bad is that I know the wing will still have play and movement. I have checked to see if the bolts are still tight and they were, I have done this twice.

Has anybody else had any similar or even different problems?

This is a bummer to hear as I was just looking at purchasing the Hybrid and the wings. I am also curious as to whether or not the wings can hold up to any real impact. Hearing about yours issue makes me think not. I hope for your sake, that you get this figured out.

all 4 bolts were tight and it still wobbles? Is the wing wobbling or the whole bumper assembly is wobbling? Check the welds that holds the wing to the bracket to see if they are busted.

I'd post a cell phone video and send it to SSO.... just a thought.

the wings themselves are braced and gusseted...so they can probably take a good hit. Not so sure about the welds that hold the wing to the bracket.

I just inspected the welds on my specimen and mine look clean...but who knows...i don't know squat about metallurgy.

They are built solid in my opinion. I’m just getting play throughout the whole wing. I honestly believe where it mates up to the winch bumper is where the it’s starting.

Yeah, so check the welds. You might have a cracked weld where the wing meets the bracket that attaches to the lo pro bumper. You should be able to see the welds by peeling back the fender liner

Thank you. I did not think to check any of the welds. I will do so tomorrow and get back with my findings.

They are built solid, I believe they will take a pounding(that’s what she said!). The bumper itself is a rock, very well made. I’m going to mess with it tomorrow figure this out. I have not contacted SSO personally over this matter. During my purchase and building of my bumper they had excellent customer service.

The wing itself has a wobble to it. All bolts are tight and snug. I’m going ness with it, I’ll keep updates.

I have had mine installed for about 15k and don't have any issues. They feel solid and no wind noise at all. When you say they are tight, are they torqued to a set value? I think I put about 75 -85 ft. lbs. on mine. Good luck.

It's probably just frame flex vs the body. It happens on full width bumpers, and you can see it easily from the driver's seat (aka my Shrockworks bumper). The stock bumper cover being plastic can move and flex, even though it's connected to the fender.

You've added a steel bumper, then wings that go up the side where some plastic still meets it. It's most likely movement that's from the frame (bumper is attached to the frame, and the wing is attached to it) and the plastic is going to move around a bit.

On full width bumpers, you usually leave 1/2" gap between the bumper and the fender for frame movement.

Back to the SSO, I'm sure it's as stout as it's supposed to be with great welds and strength. Maybe check over any clips or trim pieces and make sure one side matches the other. If it's happening on one side, it should do it on both if they're both made the same.

So I just installed mine a few days ago, I found it the upper two bolts of the wing isn’t torqued down, it will wobble. What I ended up doing is, pulling the bumper skin off after I mocked everything up n tighten the bolts down til the wings were on tight then I put the bumper skin back on.

Now it’s tight as a .......um...it ain’t moving

good to hear that it wasn't a design flaw or poor/ broken welds. I should have mine in shortly.

Rattle

I’ve got this rattle too. I’m very curious to know if anyone is actually able to make it go away completely. From the design and physics standpoint, I’m skeptical that it will be made to stop altogether. The bumper skin that used to attach at multiple points along its bottom and sides is now only supported by the sides of these wings. What Dobinsons Mike said about bumpers and flexing is true. The now loose bumper skin rests on a flexing piece of metal wing. Combine that with wind from higher speeds and you’ve got a recipe for noise. The rubber strip that’s provided helps it some, but it’s still annoyingly loud inside the cabin with audio sources on and up at high volumes.

So this is where I’m getting the noise from. Welds are all strong. This is the driver side and the only side giving the noise. Passenger side looks the same. But, I have no play.
