We'll take comfort in the fact that it increases our chances of winning over the 10 year span as a whole. Great player and worthy of that contract for his last ten years. Next ten, different story. He apparently wanted to bag the highest paid status. I hope he enjoys it more than winning.

He was "all about staying with St. Louis, the team that drafted him," until it actually came down to payday. Greedy athletes like him are what is wrong with sports today, which is why I don't watch/follow anything but hockey.
Not that there aren't some pretentious attitudes in hockey, but the highest paid hockey player barely makes $8Mil/yr and has to work a lot harder for that money (in my opinion).
Sad to see him go? Absolutely not, there isn't enough talent in the world to garner that type of money for playing a game. It has nothing to do with love for the game, its all about selling out to the highest bidder. Here's to wishing him a diminished career and never winning a championship again.

I'm wondering if he would have resigned with St Louis if LaRussa was still manager or if (forget the name) the guy he was pushing to replace him got the job. He could have gone down as one of the greatest Cardinals in history. Oh well, get that money I guess. I do agree that it's better that he left than for the Cardinals to spend anywhere near $252 million on him. We'll see how the Angel's are doing in 5 years.
Either way it shows just how out of control money in sports has gotten. With all of these national television contracts, there's so much money to be made, it's ridiculous. Who would you rather have it? The players or the owners? Because someone is going to get it. I'm not sure on the answer myself. I know there once was a day where the owners didn't own a team because they wanted to make money. They owned it because they were a fan of the team (and probably a fan ever since they were a little kid). The players were paid, but not a ton. They played mainly because they loved the game.
At least he didn't say that it wasn't about the money and then leave and sign a $250 million contract with the Yankees *cough* pay-Rod *cough*.
