Star Wars: Episode VII

Anyone excited about the new Star Wars movie coming out next year? It looks like it will be pretty good and finally will be back close to the original trilogy. I like the fact that this now has recognizable spacecraft like the first movies.

I am more concerned than excited. After seeing JJ Abrams turn Star Trek into "Star Trek-90210" am I worried that he'll f#*$-up Star Wars as well.
....then again, Lucas had Jar Jar Binks and the Ewoks so Abrams may be an improvement.

It's hard not to love Star Wars but those three that came out a decade ago or whenever it was were terrible.

It is hard to be worse than Revenge of the Sith. I am more worried about Jurassic World.

Well -hopefully- JJ and crew will remain true to the story of IV, V and VI. I mean they went through all the trouble of bringing back Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher for this new episode - hopefully JJ and Disney won't squander this opportunity, and they'll create something worthy of the first three.
....I am so tired of "reboots" -- just stick with the damn story.

I feel like they are only doing that to capitalize on their popularity from the first trilogy. I personally am not keeping my hopes up. I feel what made the first three special cannot be duplicated. It was a mix of great casting, story, simplicity and uniqueness that I don't think you can force again. In film, I firmly believe one of the best tools is having a lack of a big budget. It seems to force directors and producers to being more creative. George Lucas has stated that if he had the budget and technology when filming the first one, he would have computer generated much more instead of doing real model animation. And for me, I HATE the overuse of computer generated stuff. It is why I can still watch the first three to this day. Using the models for the ships gave so much more of a real feel to the scenes as well as the use of simplistic backdrops for the worlds. Desert, forest, ice, etc etc. JJ Abrams likes a lot of implied fear and such, which I do think is a good start, but still don't think it's going to work.

But, I'm a pessimistic old man. We'll just have to wait and see!

CGI overuse is a problem in most movies out today. It actually ends up looking LESS realistic. I remember when I watched Avatar... uke:

Agreed. That movie should have just been a full animated film. One directors work I enjoy is Guillermo del Toro. His use of super creative costumes and such in such films as Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy 1 and 2 were amazing. Yes, some CGI was used, but it wasn't too overdone.
