Starter?????? Bad Ground?????

O.K. I dont know if there is an old thread about this or not i searched though.. My 98 4 runner has a single click when trying to start it. This does not happen all the time but it now its getting more frequent. I replaced the battery so i'm thinking its the starter. I was also told that it could be a bad ground to the starter. Anyone else have this happen to them? Any solutions? Should i just get a new starter? Does any have any answers that could possibly help me. Thanks for everyones time...:bonk: :mad:

The contacts in the starter may be going bad. I don't have 1st hand knowledge but I've read of people buying new contacts for a few bucks and putting them in.

I agree with your guess too. Check the battery cables, both ends and the ground cable to the enginge block. If it is clean and tight loosen it a 1/4 turn and re-snug. That helps sometimes.

I know the 3.4L V6 is notorious for having the starter contacts burn up over time, and the result is what you're describing. The contacts are only about $30 worth of parts, if you're willing and able to get the starter out of the truck and replace them. Because of the high cost of labor, a dealer will only replace the whole starter rather than spending time fixing an old one.

Your dealer can get you the starter contact kits (which also include replacement bolts and o-rings). I'd also consider replacing the plunger. You can clean it up with a wire wheel or brush, but it also gets chewed up over time. That's a dealer part as well.

When i installed my new starter i had the same problem and it will start for a few days right like it should and then nothing. My Toyota 4-runner is a 91 but try to see if that solves your problem. The wiring harness to the starter handles all safety issues and that Neutral Switch that mounts on the Transmission is connected to the wiring harness to the starter. Hope this helps. The Neutral safety is around 160.00 bucks but worth it.Mine was cracked and mine was also original so it was a good investment after all. Have a great day. Mindy

I for one, paid attention to your N safety switch suggestion and thought it was a great suggestion :bigok:

There's a few women on here. For the most part I don't think many of us know for sure what sex, color or race many of the members are nor do we care. I thought you had great tip and am glad you joined the forum.
