Starter hanging (Replaced contacts)

1999 4runner 5vzfe automatic. Starts fine every time. Starter hangs about 50% of the time when letting off key. Just grinds when letting off, vehicle stays running. Replaced the contacts and the plunger. Still doing the same thing.
So has anyone had this issue before? Ignition switch? Starter relay?

Mine was doing the same thing and a new plunger and contacts fixed it. Are you sure you got the right contacts and plunger for your starter? The 1.4kw and 1.8kw starter require different contacts and plungers. Before I put my solenoid back together, I greased the plunger shaft the spring rides on so there would be less resistance when it actuates.

Sounds like the bendix shaft (the mechanism that causes the pinion gear to push out toward the flywheel and then retract) needs to be greased up.
