Starter issue... Turning over slow.

I have a 88 4runner, 22re, 5speed that I've sas'd. I bought it with the top end of the motor apart and since getting it back together I'm having trouble with the starter. The starter turns the engine very slow (still fast enough to crank though). The starter is brand new and wasn't installed when I bought the runner, can anyone identify the stock locations for the ground wire to the starter? I hooked it up in what I assumed was the factory location. Also had a few friends tell me it could just be a bad starter. Battery has 12.6 volts and all other electrical accessories work fine with the key in the on position, both when the engine is running and when it's off. Any info would be appreciated. I plan on removing the starter to bench test it tonight, just curious if anyone had run across this before.

Check all your connections.

Starter gets ground through its housing. Closest ground to it is bottom, front, passenger-side (U.S.Canada) corner of engine block.

Does the crank turn somewhat freely (minus fighting the compression) if you turn it with a wrench? The starter may be fighting some extra resistance somewhere. You may want to get your starter tested, maybe it has a weak motor?

Thanks for the info on the ground,

The engine turns over fine with a wrench, had no issues while adjusting valves.

My guess, weak battery or weak starter. I would think that if it was a wiring/grounding issue then the problem would be intermittent starting at best, not weak starting. Maybe your battery has the voltage but isn't pumping out the proper amperage? Either wait till it doesn't start and troubleshoot further or get your starter and battery tested.

With your meter on the battery, have someone crank the engine. Record voltage while cranking and report back.
