Hi all!
I'm a newbie to this forum and have a question relating to my 2000 4Runner.
A couple of days ago there was a cold snap in my neck of the woods. Northeastern USA. New Jersey to be specific. And, when I got into the 4R it did something it never did to me before... it didn't start!
I engaged the clutch (5-speed) and I turned the key as usual... but "nothing". It would not start. It didn't even make a noise! I made sure that the clutch pedal was solidly depressed, thinking that maybe I was being sloppy, or in a hurry, but again no start.
I then depressed the clutch "solidly" against the floor board, and nothing again. i tried a few more times, and then finally it started. Over the past 2 weeks this has happened a few times. So, I called the Toyota dealer that I use and they said it sounds like the starter needs to be replaced. They estimated the cost of around $500. YIKES. All right, I know that I have 116,000 miles on it; but that's a chunk of change.
I've searched this site a bit and yes it's possible that the starter does have to be replaced. I've checked the battery and it seems to be in good shape. Passing a drawdown test with the headlights on for a minute.
BUT, from what I've read on this site, my question is... shouldn't I be hearing a "clicking noise" when trying to start the 4Runner?
Also, it seems that I have to depress the clutch with all my force in order for the vehicle to start. Or, is that just a coincidence? Or, figment of my imagination?
