hello all, first post. I have a 97 4runner limited, and just recently she wouldn't start. i charged the battery overnight, still wouldn't start, so i bought a new one. No luck. then i hooked a jumper cable up to the frame, then to the negative post, and it fired up. Crap, i just blew cash on a battery when i just needed a new ground cable.
Today i installed the new ground, and i fired it up, did great. fired it up again, still sounded great. I fired it up a third time just to be redundant i guess, and it started, but the starter would not quit turning over. I shut the ignition off and removed the key, and the engine quit, yet the starter kept turning over. So i took the ground cable off the battery and it stopped.
Sooo....I'm very confused. any time now, without the key in the ignition, when i connect the ground to the battery the starter will turn. if the key is in the run position in the ignition, when i connect the ground it will fire up, but the starter won't ever disengage. when i turn the key off, the engine dies, but the starter still turns....
any advice? sounds like a bad starter or solenoid? i tried tapping on it with a wrench, no luck there. i appreciate any advice or previous experience!!! thanks so much, baron
