Starting Issue: Fuel?

My 99 started having long crank times before it would start. It only does this after it sat for a few hours or overnight. It starts normally when you turn the key to ON for 30 seconds or so before starting. There are no issues when driving or idling.

Does this sound like the regulator? My pump is a denso that was replaced almost two years ago, less than 20k miles on it so I am doubting it's that but not ruling it out.

When you say longer cranks, about how many turns are we talking about?

Could be several different things but it is symptomatic of a fuel pump's anti-drain back valve allowing fuel to drain back into tank when sitting for longer periods.

What say others?

About 2-3 seconds worth of cranking. There are times it won't turn over and I have to try a second time and it starts up right away.

I think about 2 seconds is pretty normal for these trucks since the fuel pump doesn't engage until you've actually turned the key to ignition (rather than many other vehicles' fuel pumps that engage when the key reaches the ON position). (Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here.)

There are times it won't turn over and I have to try a second time and it starts up right away.

But yeah, it should start the first time.. Do you see this symptom only on cold starts after a night of sitting? Does it ever happen on warm starts?

I'll be watching to see what you end up figuring out, since my truck usually cranks for 1-2 seconds, and every once in a while in cold weather it won't start until the second attempt (always right away on the second attempt). This after new battery, fuel filter, Denso starter and starter relay, spark plugs, etc.

Based on what I've read on this forum, it seems like many people experience longer-than-expected crank times, but often those threads end up concluding "that's just the way it is."
