Starting problems...

So here's the deal... The 4runner has started having starting problems. No codes thrown. And I have read plenty of threads on starter contacts going bad. I purchased these and plan on replacing them anyways this spring. The runner starts but it takes sometimes a few turns of the key. It also seems that it will fire up and start if I turn the key harder almost is if the contacts in the key ignition are going bad. I also have cleaned the negative cable. Any thoughts? I just want to be sure that when I swap out the contacts in the starter that will take care of the problem once and for all.

If the starter is turning the motor over at a normal speed, I doubt it is your starter cables. Could be ignition(spark plugs etc) or fuel related too.

Usually you will hear a "click" when you try to start it when the starter contacts are bad. Several tries usually gets the starter spinning. I did see later model Camrys that did nothing when trying to start. Checked them with a voltmeter at the solenoid to verify.

I just replaced the plugs with OEM Denso plugs and cables with NGK. Furle pump was replaced a little while ago as well. It runs great when fired up just starting seems to be the issue...

Tim, That sounds just like what I'm hearing. It will click a few times then start up. I will try and check with voltmeter tonight if weather permitting.

Oh, ok... yeah if its clicking then that does sound likely

If you are getting the clicking sound (most likely from bad starter contacts) then pretty soon it won't start at all. You might want to replace those contacts sooner rather than later.

especially so the magnetic plunger does not stick in the groove worn down into the contacts and start a fire!
