starting problems

99 limited 286k 4wheel drive automatic
i have an issue that i'd like to throw at you. Have had starting issues..requires that i push on auto shifter to crank or it clicks. (6)rubber groments replaced at shifter.(that snugs up shifter)..replaced neutral safety switch..Didnt do starter because it cranks by pushing on shifter...any thoughts on linkage or worn bushing...of course i can replace starter but it acts like the throw of the auto shifter is coming up short. I didnt see anyone with this issue, its usually worn groments or starter. Its worse when the car is at a incline.
