I have a 96 SR5 w/ 110,000 miles on it. About 2 months ago, it failed to start for the first time since I bought it. I replaced the battery since it was about due anyway. Initially, it still would not start, but after cleaning up the cable connectors and making sure they were tight, it fired right up. I figured problem solved until recently. It will not start again. The voltage on the battery measures 13.7V, so I think that's good. When I turn the key, I hear relays click, then a spinning sound. The starter does not attempt to crank the motor at all. This seems to be intermittent.
I can turn the key several times w/ the same result, then I turn it one more time and it starts...sometimes.
What do you guys think? I will double check my battery cable connections and starter relay. My starter is probably the culprit.
I just hate to have to spend $170 bucks right now. I was also wondering about the factory alarm system. Could that be cutting off my starter? How do I disconnect that? I have a manual transmission, so there is that clutch start disengage button. Could that be the issue?
