Starting Security Feature

I had a 96 mustang that had a feature installed from the factory which wouldn't allow the car to start unless the brights were flashed twice. I'm sure it was some kind of relay. I'd like to do something like that with my 86 runner as a security feature to disable the starter so it has less of a chance of being stolen.

What I am thinking is making the switch the hi beams. The difference would be that I would be pulling the lever towards me while starting rather than flashing them twice. From the ignition switch a wire would go the the high beams switch then follow back on its original path. Are there any issues with using the high beams as the switch in terms of current or load on that circuit? I could always just install a simple switch and hide it, but if it's found then it serves no purpose.

I don't have a whole lot of input as far as the headlights being able to handle it...but it would actually be easier for a thief to start your truck if you wired this up. This type of kill switch has been around a while so most people that are in the business of stealing cars know that. It would be the first thing they would try( get in, no start, then try turn signals, then high beams, etc) so IMO I would wire up 2 kill switchs, 1 for the fuel pump, 1 for the starter. Even then it's no gaurantee that the thief won't get your truck, just do as much as possible to slow him down

Ha. Thanks for the input. It wouldn't make it easier, just not harder. Easier would be if somebody looks at the car and it starts. Good call in the second kill switch. I'll definitely do that.

One of my favorite ways to do a starter kill is to use a magnetic reed switch. You can make it so you have to place a magnet in a certain spot in order to start the truck. Its pretty stealthy and could be used as a starter kill or fuel pump kill very easily.
