Stashing an extra key

I got really lucky and found it on ebay for $60.00 dont know how much it really costs. To install it was rather easy once you get past the fact if you make and errors you will have 5 really big holes in your door as for wiring it is easy the unit takes power and gives off the ground you need to unlock the doors I interfaced it to the alarm system so it disables the alarm. Got one as a 'thank you' for my Tacoma, none for my 4R yet. AAA members can also get this credit card key cut.

Another alternative is to have the hardware store cut a regular Toyota car key--it won't start the engine because there's no immobilizer chip in it, but flat and strong enough to be in your wallet and use more often.
 
isn't it our T4R, dont auto-lock itself unless there is a driver seated, even when engine is running? it got sensors to sense weight on the driver's seat.

can someone confirm this, because i thought thats how it works.
 
I had a non chip key made at the dealer - it's only like $6 - and taped it under the vehicle. It won't start the vehicle, just unlock.

I agree it would be difficult to lock your keys inside but, for me, having that extra key in place is just piece of mind.

I remember the horror of locking my keys in a car while in line at a restaurant's parking valet, the engine running and with customers. Luckily, I had that extra key hidden under the bumper and averted that embarrassing moment. That's why I will never be without a spare key.

Could you a picture of this "plastic" key and post it? I went to the dealership and ask for such thing, but I was told that they never saw any of those and doesn't know what I'm talking about. If I'd have an image, I can show it to them and make them do one for me.

Your dealer is either BSing you or should get out more and see the real world.

i know a kid who would put his spare in one of those magnetic boxes and stick it onto the frame somewhere, never had an issue. But the credit card keys are sounding better and i think being with AAA im going to have to snag one of those.
 
It's tough if you're by yourself and you go out for a surf session. Surf shorts usually have secure pockets but will the salt water affect the computer chip?

This sounds to me like the only way to go.
I'd be afraid of the cedit card type key breaking off in the door lock causing a nice little "repair".
 
magnet box under the frame like someone said before. Just make sure it's in a secure place and that its waterproof. don't want to be rusted out of your own key.
 
I know someone who hid a key in their fuel door and as one would expect someone broke in while school was going on and stole her new deck and some other stuff, just make sure its hidden well if you hide on the body.

Yep. Interesting place to hide. If you locked the car and spare key is in place which you can open from inside. It's a circle. No start point and no end

no sorry, I was using it as an example to hide it in a safe spot, I know the doors are opened from the inside, it was on a truck

Good idea, but what about if you go off-roading and will be crossing rivers and/or mudholes. Looks like it is not waterproof which also means that you might have problems with chip function. For same reason any lock-boxes under the car on frame are not suitable for off paved road driving.
 
I never had issues with it, its pretty heavy steel.. but the only things it was subjected to is snow and rain.

In situations such you describe, I say screw it and take out my FJ60 :)
 
how can one get the plastic key from AAA? I went to their website and searched but i couldln't find anything? thanks!
